On Thursday, 15 November the Surrey public voted for their first ever Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC). Independent candidate, Kevin Hurley, won the election and took office on Thursday, 22 November, replacing the Surrey Police Authority.
The PCC will aim to cut crime and deliver an effective and efficient police service, providing stronger and more transparent accountability of the police. PCCs are elected by the public to hold the Chief Constable and the Force to account. They will ensure community needs are met as effectively as possible, by working in partnership across a range of agencies, at a local and national level, to ensure there is a unified approach to prevent and reduce crime. The PCC will not be expected to run the police - the day-to-day direction and control will remain with the Chief Constable; the role of the PCC is to be the voice of the people.
