Profile: PCSO Kelly Wootton
PCSO Kelly Wootton
Kelly Wootton joined Surrey Police as a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) for Old Dean in Surrey Heath in December 2004. Before this Kelly worked for an IT company, but she fancied doing something more community based. As she said: "I wanted a job where it made a difference whether I turned up to work or not".
One of Kelly's greatest attributes is her genuine desire to provide a professional, high quality level of service to the community. It is clear that she sincerely cares for the residents from all walks of life and always tries to see the best in people, even the more problematic individuals. Kelly's weekly football training sessions are an excellent example of her ability to engage with youngsters and divert their attention away from ant-social behaviour and she has persevered with some of these young people where many others have given up hope on them.
Working alongside Neighbourhood Specialist Officer, PC Dale Hathaway, Kelly has actively sought to solve problems in the Old Dean, engaging with partner agencies in the form of housing associations, youth services, local authority, local councillors and mediation services. Jointly Dale and Kelly have arranged and run an additional youth night during the week at the local youth centre which is always well attended and has significantly improved police relations with young people within the Old Dean estate.
In the later part of 2005, Kelly obtained the key intelligence around drug production which was then developed by PC Hathaway in conjunction with the intelligence unit. The subsequent operations lead to the recovery of a significant quantity of drugs both in Surrey and the Metropolitan Police areas as well as the arrest of a number of key individuals. This was only possible due to the links and confidence Dale and Kelly have forged with the local community.
