Chief Constable Mark Rowley & Surrey County Council Leader Dr Andrew Povey chat to officers at the campaign launch & REED event

THE launch by Surrey Police and Surrey County Council of a Drive SMART campaign alongside a Roadside Education and Enforcement Day (REED) last week produced some interesting results, the most surprising of which was how many motorists still risk their life by driving while not wearing a seatbelt.

At the event, held at Perry Hill in Worplesdon, Guildford, drivers stopped by police and council road safety officers for committing an offence and offered, where appropriate, road safety education on the spot rather than a penalty were as follows:

• For not wearing a seatbelt - 44

• For speeding (on a road with a 40 miles per hour limit) - 4

• For using a mobile phone behind the wheel - 4

• For other offences – 6

Drive SMART is a Surrey Police and Surrey County Council partnership campaign focusing on education and changing driver behaviour to encourage more considerate driving, after nearly half the respondents to a regular neighbourhood survey told us that anti-social driving and speeding are a big concern for them.

The campaign targets a range of driving behaviours that negatively affect the lives of other road users or local residents. These include tailgating, bad or inconsiderate parking, using a handheld mobile phone at the wheel, speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt and generally thoughtless or reckless driving.

Chief Constable Mark Rowley said: “Anti-social driving is a top concern for the people of Surrey. Our intention by launching the Drive SMART campaign with Surrey County Council is to change driver behaviour. The worst offenders on the roads need prosecuting but our REED events are all about education rather than enforcement. We want to have a big impact on motorists and action days like this one are a part of it.”

Leader of Surrey County Council, Dr Andrew Povey, said: “I think it was a surprise to all of us that so many drivers appear to be driving without seatbelts. This year-long campaign is aimed at helping drivers to realise the importance of safe and sensible driving for their own good as well as for the good of all other road users. Anti-social driving also blights the lives of local residents and it is vital we continuously reinforce the need for good driving.”
