Caterham teen arrested in connection with stolen car
A rapid response from a local Tandridge Safer Neighbourhood officer assisted by targeted patrol teams resulted in a Caterham teenager being arrested on suspicion of stealing a car.
At 3.30am on Thursday, 4 February, PC Martin Bassom was carrying out his routine patrols when he spotted a blue Renault Clio had crashed on the A22 Godstone Road, near to the Wapses Lodge roundabout. As PC Bassom went to assist, the driver ran away from the car and into a subway.
PC Bassom gave chase and with the assistance of response officers a suspect was arrested in the grounds of Marsden Lodge School.
PC Bassom said: “After arresting the suspect I contacted the registered owner of the car who was at home asleep and had not even realised his car had been stolen. He was grateful we had recovered it for him and thanked officers. I know auto-crime is a real concern for residents and the Safer Neighbourhood Team is committed to tackling this issue and we will target criminals operating in the area.”
A 16-year-old boy, from Caterham, has been released on police bail until Friday, 5 March, pending further enquiries.
