Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates

Update: 21/07/2010 17:29:34

Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities

You Said... We Did

You told us about...youth disorder in Hazel Avenue (ref: GD/08/7803).
We responded...by continually monitoring this location. As a result, we have seen a decrease in the amount of Anti Social Behaviour in the area. We will continue to monitor the location and act on any reports that we receive.

You said...there have been issues of criminal damage to cars along Weyside Road (GD/10/5961)
We responded...by setting up a Neighbourhood issue which will increase the police presence in the area and show as a priority when reports are made to Surrey Police. The location has also been placed on Safer Neighbourhood Area Patrols (SNAP) which allow local teams to cover the area over the weekends where they can tackle the local neighbourhood issues and priorities.

You said... there was anti-social use of motor vehicles in Westfield and Moorfield Roads (ref: GD/09/9612).
We responded... by engaging with the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) who attended the location and issued Fixed Penalty Notices and 'producers' (the notice issued to a drivers when a police officer requests to see driving documents and the driver does not have them to hand). The Roads Policing Unit also seized vehicles. We continue to monitor this location.

You said... there are concerns over the speed cars are travelling along Bellfields Road, Slyfield.
We responded... by continually monitoring the location. If you live along this location and are experiencing the same problems please contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 in order for us to build a bigger picture of key times and days the incidents are happening.

General update

Local male convicted after good work by local PCSO's

A well known local male youth from Slyfield, was successfully tried at Guildford Magistrates Court on Tuesday 29th June after two local PCSO's attended court to give evidence against him.

The male was tried for the offences of driving otherwise in accordance of a licence and having no insurance.

The male was summons to court after the PCSO's had seen him driving a vehicle, knowing that he did not hold a full UK Driving Licence. The male was ordered to pay a sum of £215 in fines and received 12 months disqualification from driving.

Bike Thefts

Over the past months there has been an increase in the amount of reports relating to the thefts of Bikes. Below are some tips to help secure and prevent your bike being stolen:

• Always lock your bike when you leave it. You should invest in a good quality D lock or high security chain. A list of police recommended products can be found on the Sold Secure website www.soldsecure.com

• Lock your bike through the rear wheel and front wheel and secure it to a strong immovable object such as a bike rack or lamp post (making sure that you do not obstruct pedestrian routes).

• Do not allow the chain or lock to drag on the ground as this can make it easier for the thieves to break or cut it.

• Leave your bike where it can be seen by other people or an area covered by CCTV cameras.

• Remove any accessory that is easily stolen and take it with you.

• Have your bike marked and registered. There are a number of schemes that offer this service www.immobolise.com

• Many bikes are stolen from people’s homes from insecure garages or sheds. Use your bike lock at home and secure your bike to a heavy or immovable object. There are a number of wall and ground anchors that can be fitted see www.soldsecure.com

• Make sure that the garage or shed is locked.

• If you have any information about anyone who might be involved with bicycle theft, please ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

You Said... We Did

You told us about... youth disorder in Hazel Avenue (ref: GD/08/7803).
We responded... by continually monitoring this location. As a result, there has been a considerable reduction in reported incidents.

You said... there was anti-social use of motor vehicles in Westfield and Moorfield Roads (ref: GD/09/9612).
We responded... by engaging with the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) who attended the location and issued Fixed Penalty Notices and 'producers' (the notice issued to a drivers when a police officer requests to see driving documents and the driver does not have them to hand). You said... there were nuisance motorcycles in Bellfields and Slyfield (ref: GD/10/4206).
We responded... by monitoring the situation and have to date seized two motorbikes.

Poor attendance at Police Surgeries
For the last three months the Safer Neighbourhood Team has been holding Police Surgeries at the Aggy Hall from 11.00am-12.00noon. Unfortunately, due to low attendance we no longer feel that these meetings are beneficial to local residents.

You Said... We Did

At a recent 'Have You Say Meeting' you told us... that you had concerns about obstructive parking on the pavement, cycle lane and double yellows lines outside the BP garage in Epsom Road (Ref: GD/09/11155)
We continue to respond... by carrying out patrols at the location and dealing with offenders. Since the issue was brought to the attention of the Safer Neighbourhood Team, I have noticed a reduction, as has the Roads Policing Unit although we are aware that a small minority still park illegally.

You made... numerous reports of damage to motor vehicles in Sheeplands Avenue, varying from damaged wing mirrors, scratches to vehicles and most recently vehicles being damaged by paint thrown over them (Ref: GD/102290)
We responded... by noting this on the weekend briefing sheet as a 'Hot Spot' area and conducting patrols at the location. This will continue to be a Hot Spot until residents and the Safer Neighbourhood Team are satisfied that the offenders are identified and dealt with

Loan Shark crackdown
In February the national illegal money lending team launched the ‘Stop Loan Sharks’ campaign in Surrey. I recently attended an Awareness Day on this topic and would like to pass on the following, for your information...

A Loan Shark is someone who lends money as a business without the necessary Consumer Credit Licence from the Office of Fair Trading.

Loan Sharks prey on the most vulnerable, take advantage of the poorest and aren’t afraid to use violence. They charge astronomical rates of interest, with penalties and increased charges for late payments.

Loan Sharks often have extravagant lifestyles – paid for by some of the most disadvantaged in the community.

You can help! As a local Surrey resident:
• Have you, or anyone you know, been offered a cash loan?
• Have you been threatened when you couldn’t pay?
• Has your benefit or bank card been taken from you?
• Does what you owe keep growing even though you are making payments?
• Do you know the total amount owed, the interest - or how to cancel the loan?

If you’re an organisation working with vulnerable people;
• Has your client borrowed from ‘a friend’?
• Is the ‘friend’ lending to others too?
• Does your client have paperwork relating to the cash loan?
• Have benefit books/bank cards or other securities been taken?
• Is your client scared of what will happen if they miss any payments?

If you (or your business) face debt or money problems, don’t ever be tempted to use an illegal lender.

Loan Sharks not only charge astronomical rates of interest, but very often threaten violence, intimidation or blackmail if you fall behind with repayments. They may seem friendly at first, but don't be fooled – it won’t last.

If you are using a Loan Shark or know of any information on Loan Shark activity, please contact us in the strictest of confidence. If we don’t know, we can’t help:
• Phone: 0300 555 2222
• Text: 'loan (space) shark (space) + your message' to 60003
• Email: reportaloanshark@stoploansharks.gov.uk

Profile: My name is Abby GASTON,
I am your Neighbourhood Specialist Officer (NSO). I have worked for Surrey Police for nearly five years. I started as a Targeted Patrol Officer, responding to emergency calls. I did this for three and a half years. Although I enjoyed this I found myself wanting to be more involved with the Victims, Informants and Offenders. So I chose neighbourhoods. This is where I feel I have made the most difference, which is why, I would like to think anyone joins an emergency service. I worked as the Guildford Town NSO for almost nine months before my Inspector decided to offer me the position which I hold to date. I jumped at the chance to run my own areas and work along side an exceptional team of PCSO's. I am delighted and honoured to be given such a demanding but rewarding role. If you have any issues/concerns in your neighbourhoods and would like to raise them please either contact me on my details shown, or please come to the panel meetings. One and all are welco
