Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates
Update: 21/07/2010 10:07:03
General update
SPEEDING IN HEADLEY
YOU SAID:
At a recent meeting in Headley, the issue of vehicles speeding through the village was raised.
WE DID:
Speed checks have been increased over the past two months and a speed activated recording device was installed. The local Safer Neighbourhood Team, Casualty Reduction Officer and the Roads Policing Unit have all been involved in this Neighbourhood Issue (Reference number MV/10/726) and it appears that general speeds have been reduced.
UNSOLICITED TELEPHONE CALLS
YOU SAID:
Recently we have had several reports from residents who have been receiving telephone calls from security companies asking if they are over eighty years old and if so, they are entitled to a free security system. The questions asked by these salesmen/women related to existing security precautions on their premises and have worried some residents, we advise all residents not to discuss the security of their home with anyone.
The salespeople make their money from expensive monthly monitoring fees which appear to be far more than the industry standard. Some tele-sales marketers have also been stating that they are “Fully Approved by the Police” to increase their chances of making an appointment for a sales person to call.
WE DID:
Recently the Neighbourhood Team waited in a local resident's home for one of these sales representatives to arrive. The resident in question was targeted by a telesales marketer, who claimed to be “Fully Approved by the Police”; we did extensive checks on the salesman and have reported his company to Trading Standards. The police never recommend or approve security companies, or indeed any other company.
Legislation is in place which entitles you to chose not to receive these calls and have your number removed from such “cold calling” lists. The easiest way to register is through the internet at www.mpsonline.org.uk which is a free service offered to any residential address to remove your name.
ONGOING POLICE ACTION AND AREAS FOR CONCERN.
LAWN MOWER THEFTS
In the Leigh area there have been several thefts of ride on lawn mowers from outbuildings various distances from residential property. Police have been conducting House to House enquiries in the area and giving occupants security advice.
PROPERTY DAMAGED IN CHARLWOOD
Recently there has been damage in fields at Charlwood - barbed wire fences have been cut. If you see anybody acting suspiciously please let police know by calling 0845 125 2222. If a crime is in process please call 999.
INCREASE OF POACHING IN THE RURAL AREAS
There has been a large increase in the number of poaching incidents reported in the rural areas of Mole Valley, especially in the Newdigate area. We believe that a blue Land Rover Discovery, registration number K149MWV, is being used in this illegal activity. If you have any information regarding this sort of activity please call the police immediately. Remember poaching is theft and is treated no differently than someone stealing from a shop.
SCAMS
Police have received reports of a male calling at houses in rural areas pretending to be a neighbour who has recently moved into the area. He then states that he has ordered a package and had mistakenly given their address. The male then asks that the resident sign for the package on his behalf and that he will call back to pick it up. The Police strongly advise that members of the public do not sign for goods as they may have been purchased with stolen credit/debit cards. Should someone similar call at your address, please contact the Police immediately.
There are many scams out there at present, if it sounds to good to be true, it usually is!
AVIATION SECURITY
Security in the surrounding area of Gatwick Airport remains an ongoing challenge, many of the villages in the south of Mole Valley are under the main flight path. If you travel in the Capel, Hookwood, Charlwood, and Newdigate areas please report any suspicious activity immediately on 0800 789321.

Profile: I started work for Surrey Police in September, 1998. Since this date, most of my service has been at Dorking, with the exception of just over a year where I worked on both the burglary and pro-active teams at Epsom, which involved the investigation of domestic burglaries and the execution of search or arrest warrants. My current role as a Neighbourhood Specialist officer involves policing the rural villages on the East of the Mole Valley area.
