Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates

Update: 25/08/2010 17:35:02

Surrey Police and partner agencies have continued to work towards tackles the issues of Anti social behaviour on Portland Drive. This area continues to be an area of interest and there continue to be people hanging around in the stairwells and walkways which can be intimidating for residents and members of the public.
Youth workers have been spending lots of time on Portland Drive conducting outreach work aiming to engage with the harder to reach youths and to find out their interests and what they want in Merstham. As a result of this outreach work and a lot of hard work and kind volunteers a youth club has now opened at the Oakley, Radstock Way, Merstham. This youth club is being held on a Tuesday evening for 11-18 year olds. Hopefully if this club generates plenty of interest, then additional days and activities may be added.
Raven Housing Trust has also been running youth activities at the Oakley on a Tuesday afternoon throughout the summer holidays which have been well attended.

On 6th August 2010 a BBQ took place on the walkway of the Portland Drive flats. This was organised by Raven Housing Trust, Steve Moody and Tony Freeman from Raven Housing Trust, Tracey Burrows and Garry Smith (the co-ordinator of the Portland Drive Neighbourhood Watch) who were all involved and contributed to make the occasion successful.
The weather was not at its best, but the BBQ was well attended considering it was the first one. It demonstrated the community spirit of Merstham and lets hope there will be lots more events in the future.

Surrey Police have recently funded an Alertbox project for the businesses in Portland Drive. This is an electronic device given to each business which allows alert messages to be sent between the businesses.
The traders are able to send 'warning' or 'help' alerts to their neighbours by pressing a button, the activation will then set off an alarm in the neighbouring businesses. These allow traders to work together as a community; to help and support each other if they have a theft or a problem customer. The initial feedback for these devices is very positive.

All in all Portland Drive has shown a vast improvement over the past year, however it is still not perfect and we will all continue to work hard to improve it and make it a nicer place to live.

We have had a couple of incidents recently in the High Street, Merstham of theft of car registration plates. I would like to remind you that there are anti-thefts screws available at the front office of Reigate Police station.

The Next Panel Meeting is on Wednesday 15th September at 7:30 pm at The Community Facility 44 Portland Drive Merstham. I hope to see you there

At the Police Panel meeting on Wednesday 12th May 2010 you raised the following Police issues;

You said that you wanted a document published by Surrey Police in relation to the Surrey Police process from when an initial call is make either via 99 or 08451252222 until it is filed.
We have asked the communication department to put together a document which is currently being processed. We would like to present it to the panel meeting once completed for approval.

You said that you were concerned about speeding on Brook Road,
We have made the Casualty Reduction Officer and the Road's Policing Unit PCSOs aware and they now patrol this area as part of their patrol plan. The Community Speed Watch is also in operation in the area. The council are looking at putting in speed limit sign to remind drivers of the speed limit.

We have recently had complaints about youths riding dangerously around the estate on a motor bike not wearing helmets . I am please to let you know that two males have been arrested in relation to these incidents. One male caught in the act has been charged with a number of traffic offences including dangerous driving, driving without a license and driving without insurance. This male is due to make an appearance in court in the near future.

We also had complaints about graffiti in the new children’s play area in Brook Road Recreation Ground. Two males have been named as suspects and they took it upon themselves to wash off what they had written and apologised about their reckless behaviour. The remainder of the graffiti has been removed by the graffiti busters.

I do not wish of this to happen again therefore I am taking a zero tolerance approach and have not been allowing any youths in the park who are over 13 years old and are not there for legitimate reason i.e. minding a younger child.

The anti-social behaviour in Portland Drive continues to be a problem. Police, the local council, Raven Housing Trust and youth services have been working together to establish and put in place possible solutions to minimise this issue. Multi agency work is to be discussed during Joint Action Group Meetings and actions will be fed back to residents at the pnel meting.

We have continued to patrol the flats and stairwells especially in the evening and are due to get more resources to help us with this priority issue.
The situation has greatly improved; over the past month we have only had 2 crimes reported and 4 incidents which is a massive reduction.
