Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates

Update: 16/07/2010 09:39:21

Your help is needed!
Where would you like to meet your Safer Neighbourhood Team? What about your local supermarket or library? Would you prefer to meet them out on patrol? Or are there other potential meeting places you can think of?

We are looking for your ideas for the easiest and most convenient places to meet your Neighbourhood Policing Team, after surveys carried out over the past month show that many people are not coming to existing events or using their local police stations.

Retaining old police buildings across the force costs £2.4 million a year with an average cost to the force of £82 per visit - the equivalent of three hours of a police officer’s time. In comparison the vast majority of residents contact Surrey Police by telephone with 2,629 calls received on average per day at a total running cost to the force of £7 per call. Under the proposed changes to our buildings, the force is looking to save the cash equivalent of £52 million over the next ten years.

Surrey Police wants to work with the public to ensure that more convenient locations are found to maintain and improve face-to-face meetings with the neighbourhood policing team currently based at Egham Police Stations. No police stations will be closed until a range of meeting places have been set up and until Surrey Police Authority agree any changes.

Savings made by the closure of costly police stations and their replacement with more convenient locations will go towards helping the force to recruit up to 200 extra police constables.

Get in touch!
Please let us have your meeting place ideas by completing our brief online survey. You can also come along to one of the public meetings we are attending (see below), to discuss your ideas further.

Our plans in more detail
We want to…
• Employ up to 200 new extra police officers across the force, with additional officers to tackle anti-social behaviour and cross-border crime.
• Use additional officers to make up a strengthened Neighbourhood Support Team consisting of one sergeant and six police constables. A detective constable will also join the team to address local crime and priority issues.
• Provide extra resources in the Cross Border Investigation Team tackling force-wide serious and organised crime and class A drugs supply, plus an extra Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Intercept team to help protect Surrey’s borders from travelling criminals, and a new dedicated rape investigation team.
• Provide a greater range of places where you can meet your neighbourhood officers

This will…• Make sure that we are available in places, and at times, that are more convenient to the public we serve
• Ensure that Surrey remains a financially sustainable force into the future
• Maintain and improve the public’s level of confidence in their neighbourhood police

The public consultation is taking place between 12 July and 12 September. The plans will then be presented to Surrey Police Authority, following which I will send you further updates.

Come and meet us to discuss your ideas
The Runnymede Borough Safer Neighbourhood Teams will be attending many different events over the coming weeks to ensure we meet as many people, and get as many new meeting place ideas, as possible.

A surgery at MANOR FARM DAY CENTRE, is held for the more senior residents who may not be able to make the other sessions we hold in the library at Egham.

Currently there are no arranged dates for the Manor Farm surgery.

Contacting Officers

Neighbourhood Officers can also be contacted in person. You can visit the police station or office where we work from, or we are generally able to make home visits. Some officers run surgeries where you can discuss any issues.

All matters are treated with the utmost confidence.
