Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates

Update: 02/07/2010 13:33:19

Hello and welcome to the latest update on policing issues in Camberley Town...

You said, We did…

You told us... of a problem with people driving erratically at night time in the Knoll Road multi-storey car park.
We responded... by patrolling the car park, issuing formal warnings to errant drivers and liaising with the Council who now ensure that the gates are shut at the appropriate time.

You said... there was a problem with inconsiderate parking on Portesbery Road.
In response... we spoke to the council and local residents and, as of 5 July, parking enforcement legislation will be in force and any illegal parking will be dealt with. Two parking permits will be given to each residence and we will monitor the situation.

Assault in the High Street
In the early hours of Sunday, 27 June a man was assaulted outside the Que Pasa bar in Camberley High Street. The 27-year-old victim, who suffered internal injuries when he was kicked unconscious, is now in a stable condition in hospital. He had earlier been asked to leave the club after he was involved in an argument with another man. Detective Constable Richard Cooper asks anyone with information to contact police on 0845 125 22 22.

Portesbery Road bomb discovery
A cordon was placed around a property in Portesbery Road after an unexploded device was found in an outbuilding there on Thursday, 24 June. Officers spent three hours at the house after being called just after 12.30pm. Roads were closed and a 400m cordon was put in place with some residents asked to leave their homes amid fears the device was a World War II bomb. The device was taken to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit in Aldershot and found to be a less dangerous training round.

Arrests made in Surrey Heath drugs raids
Dawn raids on Thursday, 24 June in Camberley and Frimley resulted in 14 people arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.

The raids, which were the culmination of the 16-week intelligence-led Operation Kingsville, saw a team of 90 detectives, dog handlers, search teams and rapid entry units successfully target 11 addresses in Surrey Heath.

DI John Cable of the Operational Proactive team said: “Operation Kingsville is focused on disrupting the supply of illegal drugs in the borough and is a result of painstaking work to draw out street level dealers.”

Neighbourhood Inspector James Norbury said: “Our challenge now is to prevent alternative suppliers filling the gap. Residents will see increased patrols in areas where there are known problems, specific targeting of locations where drugs are sold and used, together with the sharing of information with the community.”

On the following day, officers swooped on five further properties as Op Kingsville gained momentum. Four more people were arrested and are currently in custody as a result of the early morning warrants executed in Camberley, Frimley Green and Chobham.

DI Cable added: “This morning’s operation was highly successful and follows the arrest of fourteen yesterday. The aim was to target a large volume of Class A drug suppliers in a synchronised activity and demonstrates the determination of Surrey Police to eradicate the unlawful supply of such commodities and in doing so making our communities safer.”

Neighbours and residents in the various locations were provided with information about the raids which offered reassurance while encouraging the community to tell police about crime in their area. The Surrey Heath Safer Neighbourhood Team will be working closely with partner agencies, including Surrey Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) and Surrey Heath Borough Council, to offer help to drug users to break the cycle of addiction through rehabilitation and treatment. The Surrey Police Drugs Bus will be travelling through the area to enable local people to talk about issues or questions they may have about drugs in their neighbourhood.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222. Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously and free of charge on 0800 555 111.

Thanks,
Dale

Hello and welcome back!

Excellent results
There have been some excellent results achieved over the past month by the town centre team and our colleagues at the Mall shopping centre. Some significant thefts were thwarted and those responsible have been charged by the police.

One incident involved the theft of over £600 worth of designer jeans from House of Fraser. This week a woman was arrested by the town team, having been identified as responsible for the theft of well over £1,000 worth of designer spectacles from Vision Express. On both occasions the stolen stock was recovered and both incidents involved excellent team working from a number of agencies in and around the town centre.

Camberley Together Against Crime
With the new Camberley Together Against Crime initiative now at 'full steam' and with shops and users of the new, improved radio system more confident than ever, we have noticed a sharp decrease in regular repeat offenders committing theft and acts of anti-social behaviour in the town. It is a credit to all involved that the vast majority of offences reported are now being committed by offenders from out of the area, or by juveniles. Word has certainly got around amongst the criminal community that Camberley town is not the place to come and commit crime!

Knoll Road car park
The Knoll Road car park, which had previously been identified as a problematic area where youths were engaging in the anti-social use of vehicles, has seen a dramatic improvement and we have worked with the council who own the facility to ensure that it is closed during periods that the Arts Link centre is not in use. Increased Police patrols and this partnership working have improved the situation for nearby residents. Instances of police being called to disorder in the car park are now very rare.

Drop-in Surgery
As always, we are available to speak with you about any police-related matter, at High Cross Church, at 11.00am on the first Wednesday of each month.

Enjoy your town centre!

Gary

Hello and welcome to the latest update on Policing issues in Camberley Town Centre.

High Street Closure

Last weekend was the first weekend that the High Street was closed on Friday and Saturday nights as part of a trial for six weeks. This means that the taxi rank for this period is now situated on Obelisk Way, next to the old Farmers City Market. The idea behind this is to see if pedestrianising the High Street is a good idea to improve public safety.

Issues being dealt with

The main issues that the Policing Team are dealing with at the moment are:
1- Youths on Park Street, particularly during weekend evenings
2- The Knoll Road Multi Storey car park and vehicle issues
3- Portesbery Road parking and antisocial driving issues

If you have any information about any of these issues or see them happening, please call us straight away and quote the reference numbers in the top right of this screen. This will enable us to target the area and provide a quick Police response to try and combat the problems.

Methedrone

Methedrone is stimulant drug belonging to the chemical family of cathinones which is a group of drugs that are ‘cousins’ of the family of amphetamine compounds. The amphetamine-like drugs include amphetamine itself (speed), methamphetamine and ecstasy (MDMA), among many others. Mephedrone produces euphoria, alertness, talkativeness and feelings of empathy. It can also cause anxiety and paranoid states and risks overstimulating the heart and circulation, and it risks overstimulating the nervous system to cause fits. It is also known as meph, MC, MCAT, m-cat, 4-MMC, Miaow, Meow Meow, Bubbles, Bounce, Charge, Drone, White Magic.

We have seen a few cases of this drug in the Town Centre but at the moment (12/04/2010) Methedrone is not a controlled drug under the misuse of drugs act (which means it is not illegal to be in possession of it) but this is expected to change. We advise anybody not to have this drug as clearly it is unsafe, but dealers may also trick people to saying it is Methedrone when it is infact a controlled drug for which you can get into trouble for. If you would like to know more about it, you can visit www.talktofrank.co.uk.

Engagement Point

The first engagement surgery at the 'Ask me Point' in The Mall was held on Saturday 10th April and went very well. These are opportunities for you to come and speak to one of the Camberley Town Policing Team face to face about any Police related issues. The next one will be advertised soon and details will be put on the top right hand corner of this website, along with posters around the Town Centre.

Thanks for reading,

Dale

Profile: I am 27, and have been a Police officer for seven years, during which time I have held positions on the Divisional Crime Investigation Team, Targeted Patrol Reponse Team, and have now taken on the challenge of being a Neighbourhood Specialist officer for arguably the busiest area of Surrey Heath. I have performed duties as acting sergeant on numerous occasions, as well as making around 300 arrests. I am enthusiastic in my role, and have ambitions to progress through the ranks during the course of my career.

I am a keen football fan, having previously played for both Camberley Town and the Surrey Police side. I was part of the Police team who won against the Macedonian national side in 2006, scoring a hat trick in the national stadium at Skopje. During time off from work I can often be found Carp fishing, or climbing in the mountains of Snowdonia or the Lake District.

Please check back regularly for updates regarding the town, and in the mean time, enjoy it!
