Keep Christmas Crime Free
The Christmas and New Year period is a great time for family and friends to get together and celebrate the festivities.

Unfortunately, opportunist thieves also operate at this time of year. Crime levels in Surrey are low and there is no need to be unduly worried about becoming a victim of a crime. However, there are a few simple measures that can deter criminals and help keep you and your possessions safe at Christmas.

When shopping
• Be wary of pick-pockets and make sure your purse or wallet is secure and kept out of sight
• Do not leave shopping bags – or other signs of shopping such as wrapping paper – on view in your car. A bag of Christmas presents left on the back seat can make a thief’s day
• Always close car doors and windows and engage your steering lock
• Park in a well-lit area or an attended car park

At home
• Don't leave presents under the Christmas tree in view of the window. Hide them somewhere safe until you need them (which also makes it more of a surprise)
• Mark expensive presents (such as electronic equipment) with your postcode, either by engraving or using a UV pen
• Dispose of packaging carefully particularly for expensive electrical items – empty boxes left outside a house can advertise what's inside to a would-be thief

If you are going away
• If going away over the festive period, remember to tell your keyholders or neighbours that you will be away and ask them to keep an eye on your house
• If you are a keyholder, inform the property owner if this will prevent you being able to attend alarm activations
• Use timers to switch on lights, radio and TV so it looks as if you are at home
• Cancel milk and newspapers
• Securely lock all doors and windows

If you are out on the town
• Don't leave bags over the back of your chair and keep your purse or wallet close to your body
• Make prior arrangements for getting home. Make sure someone knows where you are going and what time you'll be back
• Don't get into an unlicensed taxi
• Don't drink too much – you could become a target for crime

Call 0845 125 2222 for all non-emergency policing matters.

Call 999 in a genuine emergency requiring police attendance (eg if a crime is in progress or someone is in immediate danger).

Call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you have information about crime but don't want to leave your name.

Halloween

The evening of the 31st of October, ‘Halloween’, is historically the busiest night of the year for the police.

The majority of people enter into the spirit of the evening, however a mindless few will take the opportunity to be a general nuisance and cause criminal damage. This will not be tolerated and Surrey Police are lying on extra patrols to combat this. The Safer Neighbourhood Team will be out en-mast proactively patrolling your area in an effort to allow the vast majority of you to enjoy the evening’s festivities.

I would ask all residents to report any anti-social behaviour to Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222. Please be patient as the volume of calls is anticipated to be extremely high. I would also ask that parents be aware of what their children are doing and pay particular attention to your egg and flour stocks. Surrey Police will be speaking to local shops keepers asking them to be extra vigilant and not to sell flour or eggs to young people.

For those of you who don’t want to be disturbed by trick or treaters we have a supply of notices to display in windows. If you would like one of these free notices please contact us on any of the details above.

Bonfire Night

Just as Halloween finishes we have another busy night in the form of Bonfire Night. I would like to remind residents of the law’s governing fireworks.
• It is an offence to let fireworks off during night hours (11pm to 7am), except on Bonfire Night (midnight), Diwali, New Year, and Chinese New Year (1am).
• It is also an offence to supply any person under the age of 18 with fireworks.
• It is an offence to let off fireworks in the street at any time. Anyone found guilty is liable to pay a fine of up to £5,000 and can be imprisoned for up to 6 months.

Penalty notices for disorder (on-the-spot fines) can also be issued for this offence, attracting the upper tier fine of £80.

Anti Social Driving

Drive SMART is a Surrey Police and Surrey County Council partnership campaign focusing on education and changing driver behaviour to encourage more considerate driving, after nearly half the respondents to a regular neighbourhood survey told us that anti-social driving and speeding are a big concern for them.

The campaign targets a range of driving behaviours that negatively affect the lives of other road users or local residents. These include tailgating, bad or inconsiderate parking, using a handheld mobile phone at the wheel, speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt and generally thoughtless or reckless driving.

Look out for a campaign coming to you soon!!

Thank you.

Two charged following street robbery in Frimley

An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy have been arrested and charged following a violent robbery in Frimley on Friday 21st August.

The incident happened at around 11:50pm, when two 16-year-old boys were approached by two older youths on Dunbar Road. The offenders, one of whom was brandishing a smashed glass bottle, threatened the two victims and demanded valuables. The suspects then punched the victims in the face and head and searched their pockets before making off with a bag belonging to one of the boys.

Following the offence, I conducted an area search and arrested one of the suspects in The Hatches, Frimley Green at around 12:20pm. Due to my local knowledge, I was able to identify the second suspect based on information given by the victims and the man was later arrested later at his home address.

Detective Sergeant Rob Bryant, Woking CID, said: “Our officers wasted no time in finding and arresting these two youths, which should serve as a warning to anyone who may be thinking of committing similar offences.

We are the eyes and ears of Surrey Police within your community. We continually share our extensive local knowledge with our investigative teams. The information we pick up when out and about can be invaluable in bringing offenders to justice, as clearly shown in this case.”

An 18-year-old from Heatherside and 17-year-old from Deepcut have been charged with robbery and attempted robbery. They are due to appear at Woking Magistrates Court on 10th September for a plea and case management hearing.

Conditions of the Road

The heavy snow earlier on this year has left some roads with numerous potholes. As a result I've received numerous enquires from member’s o the public about repairing them. There are certain things we cannot directly help with, such as potholes in roads, overhanging trees, missing signs and so on. You can report these matters to Surrey County Council Highways on 03456 009 009 or by using the ‘Report it’ option at www.surreycc.gov.uk (anything not within the remit of SCC will be referred to the appropriate authority)

Stolen Pedal-cycles

There have been a number of bicycles stolen from the area and the Safer Neighbourhood Team is urging residents to keep their bikes locked. Ensure they are post coded and take photos of them -this can help police return stolen property to the rightful owner.

If you’d like your bike post coded for free, please contact us to arrange an appointment. Police have arrested a number of juveniles in relation to recent bike thefts and the local team are working hard to continue to identify and disrupt bike thieves.

Crimestoppers

I would like to remind all residents, that if you’ve got any information about a crime, you can report it anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. This could simply be lots of comings and going from a particular address.

Thank you
