Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates

Update: 11/08/2010 15:30:21

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read our latest update...

I would like to start this months update by informing you all that from the 28th of August 2010 and I will no longer be the Neighbourhood Specialist Officer for Mytchett, Deepcut and Frimley Green. I would like to thank the residents for their support over the past four years. I have enjoyed my time as tour beat officer and it is with some sadness that I move n to a new role within Surrey Police. The vacancy is currently being advertised and I am sure you will make my replacement welcome as they settle in to their new role.

You Said... We Did

You said... that motorbikes were being driven in an anti-social manner on the Ministry of Defence Training grounds at Deepcut and on roads leading to these areas.
We responded... by liaising with our MoD Police colleagues and mounting patrols in the area, aimed at dealing with offenders.

Arrests made for cannabis cultivation
On Wednesday 21 July, officers from the Surrey Heath Neighbourhood Team and colleagues from CID carried out warrants at two addresses in Frimley Green and Deepcut. Three males were arrested after cannabis plants were found at both addresses.

Surrey Police take a zero tolerance approach towards those involved in the cultivation and distribution of controlled substances. Anyone with information is asked to contact us on 0845 125 2222. Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously and free of charge on 0800 555 111.

BBQ for Mytchett residents at the Basingstoke Canal Centre
On Tuesday, 3 August we will be hosting our annual Summer BBQ at the Basingstoke Canal Centre in Mytchett. Residents of Mytchett are invited along. Please bring your own food and drink. The BBQ is a great chance to meet other Mytchett residents and the local policing team. We hope to see you there from 6.00am onwards.

Make life difficult for would-be burglars
In view of a number of burglaries and thefts from motor vehicles occurring in the Surrey Heath area recently, we urge you to take note of the following crime reduction advice to help keep your home and vehicles safe.

Make your home more secure – MAKE LIFE DIFFICULT FOR THE WOULD-BE BURGLAR.
• Most burglaries are committed by opportunist thieves.
• In two out of ten burglaries they don’t even have to use force – they get in through an open door or window.
• Look at your home through the burglar’s eyes. Are there places where they could break in unseen?
• Have you fitted strong locks on your doors and windows?
• Would they have to make a lot of noise by breaking glass?
• For a relatively small outlay you could make your home more secure and buy peace of mind into the bargain.

Reduce the risk of burglary happening to you by making sure you take these simple precautions:

Five ways to reduce the risk of burglary:

1. Gates and Fences: Have a rear fence/wall at least 1.8 metres high and lockable gate of a similar height. If there is a footpath to the rear of your property increase the fence height to 2 metres by attaching a trellis. Thorny hedges could also be planted by the property to deter burglars.

2. Garages and Sheds: These are often left unlocked and may be full of tools ideal for breaking into the rest of the house. Fit sheds and garages with strong padlocks and possibly alarm them. Ladders should always be locked away or secured to the side of the house with a good padlock and chain.

3. Windows and Doors: A percentage of burglaries occur via unlocked doors and windows. Ensure windows and doors are locked, particularly when leaving the house. NEVER leave keys in on display in the lock or by a window.

4. Lighting: Invest in security/movement lights. They not only provide lighting for up on dark nights for you but also disturbs the burglar. Time switches on lights inside the home also give the impression someone is at home. These can also be fitted to radios.

5. Burglar Alarms: Visible burglar alarms make burglars think twice. There are several alarms systems available, ranging from a dummy box to a police response. Alarm companies can be found in Yellow Pages or at www.yell.com/ they can give the best advice in relation to the alarm that best suits you. Several quotes are advised.

Further advice is available at www.securedbydesign.com/ or contact me or your local Crime Reduction Adviser for further assistance on 0845 125 2222.

Auto crime prevention advice
Surrey is one of the safest counties in the country, yet theft from vehicles is still one of the biggest challenges faced by Surrey Police. Unfortunately, we have seen a recent increase in thefts from vehicles. This can leave drivers dealing with the cost and inconvenience of repairs or having to replace expensive items. But by following some straightforward advice you can guard against car crime:

• Don’t leave valuables in your car. Take them with you at all times
• Shut the windows and sunroof and lock the doors and boot each time you leave your vehicle
• Use your vehicle’s security devices
• Make a note of serial numbers. Your valuable items are untraceable without them
• Keep driving documents at home
• Remove keys from the ignition and lock your car at petrol stations. Keep the keys with you
• Call the police if you see anyone acting suspiciously.

You Said... We Did

You told us... about a problem with vehicles parking illegally at The Hatches and surrounding roads in Frimley Green.
We responded... by mounting regular Roads Policing Unit and Neighbourhood Officer patrols in the area. Several motorists have since received Fixed Penalty tickets for parking offences.

Arrests made in Surrey Heath drugs raids
Dawn raids on Thursday, 24 June in Camberley and Frimley resulted in 14 people arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.

The raids, which were the culmination of the 16-week intelligence-led Operation Kingsville, saw a team of 90 detectives, dog handlers, search teams and rapid entry units successfully target 11 addresses in Surrey Heath.

DI John Cable of the Operational Proactive team said: “Operation Kingsville is focused on disrupting the supply of illegal drugs in the borough and is a result of painstaking work to draw out street level dealers.”

Neighbourhood Inspector James Norbury said: “Our challenge now is to prevent alternative suppliers filling the gap. Residents will see increased patrols in areas where there are known problems, specific targeting of locations where drugs are sold and used, together with the sharing of information with the community.”

On the following day, officers swooped on five further properties as Op Kingsville gained momentum. Four more people were arrested and are currently in custody as a result of the early morning warrants executed in Camberley, Frimley Green and Chobham.

DI Cable added: “This morning’s operation was highly successful and follows the arrest of fourteen yesterday. The aim was to target a large volume of Class A drug suppliers in a synchronised activity and demonstrates the determination of Surrey Police to eradicate the unlawful supply of such commodities and in doing so making our communities safer.”

Neighbours and residents in the various locations were provided with information about the raids which offered reassurance while encouraging the community to tell police about crime in their area. The Surrey Heath Safer Neighbourhood Team will be working closely with partner agencies, including Surrey Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) and Surrey Heath Borough Council, to offer help to drug users to break the cycle of addiction through rehabilitation and treatment. The Surrey Police Drugs Bus will be travelling through the area to enable local people to talk about issues or questions they may have about drugs in their neighbourhood.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222. Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously and free of charge on 0800 555 111.
