Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates

Update: 26/06/2010 10:20:37

You Said... We Did

You told us... of a problem with vehicles parking anti-socially along the Crawley Ridge and opposite Ashwell Avenue during the school time.
We responded... by regularly conducting Neighbourhood Officer and PCSO patrols in the area. We also liaised with schools who reported the issue in newsletters to help raise awareness of the situation.

You said... there was a problem with speeding on Crawley Hill/Church Hill.
We responded... by conducting regular speeding enforcement along Church Hill/Crawley Hill. Since our last update the Neighbourhod Specialist Officer (NSO) has given words of advice to 12 errant drivers, 13 have joined the Driver Alert Scheme and one was issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice ticket. The NSO will continue with speeding enforcement in the area.

Burglary
Since our last update, there have been three burglaries: in Collingwood Grange Close, Crawley Ridge and Middle Gordon Road. There were also two attempted break-ins in Grange Road and Tekels Park.

Crime reduction advice
In view of a number of burglaries and thefts from motor vehicles occurring in the Surrey Heath area recently, we urge you to take note of the following crime reduction advice to help keep your home and vehicles safe.

Burglary prevention
Make your home more secure – MAKE IT DIFFICULT FOR THE BURGLAR. Most burglaries are committed by opportunist thieves. In two out of ten burglaries they don’t even have to use force – they get in through an open door or window. Look at your home through the burglar’s eyes. Are there places where they could break in unseen? Have you fitted strong locks on your doors and windows? Would they have to make a lot of noise by breaking glass? For a relatively small outlay you could make your home more secure and buy peace of mind into the bargain.

Reduce the risk of burglary happening to you by making sure you take these simple precautions:

Five ways to reduce the risk of burglary
1. Gates and Fences: Have a rear fence/wall at least 1.8 metres high and lockable gate of a similar height. If there is a footpath to the rear of your property increase the fence height to 2 metres by attaching a trellis. Thorny hedges could also be planted by the property to deter burglars.
2. Garages and Sheds: These are often left unlocked and may be full of tools ideal for breaking into the rest of the house. Fit sheds and garages with strong padlocks and possibly alarm them. Ladders should always be locked away or secured to the side of the house with a good padlock and chain.
3. Windows and Doors: A percentage of burglaries occur via unlocked doors and windows. Ensure windows and doors are locked, particularly when leaving the house. NEVER leave keys in on display in the lock or by a window.
4. Lighting: Invest in security/movement lights. They not only provide lighting for up on dark nights for you but also disturbs the burglar. Time switches on lights inside the home also give the impression someone is at home. These can also be fitted to radios.
5. Burglar Alarms: Visible burglar alarms make burglars think twice. There are several alarms systems available, ranging from a dummy box to a police response. Alarm companies can be found in Yellow Pages or at http://www.yell.com/ they can give the best advice in relation to the alarm that best suits you. Several quotes are advised.

Further advice is available at http://www.securedbydesign.com/ or contact me or your local Crime Reduction Advisor for further assistance on 0845 125 2222.

Auto crime prevention advice
Surrey is one of the safest counties in the country, yet theft from vehicles is still one of the biggest challenges faced by Surrey Police. Unfortunately, we have seen a recent increase in theft from vehicles which can leave drivers dealing with the cost and inconvenience of repairs or having to replace expensive items.

By following some straightforward advice you can ensure that car crime is not something that happens to you:
• Don’t leave valuables in your car. Take them with you at all times
• Shut the windows and sunroof and lock the doors and boot every time you leave your vehicle
• Use your vehicle’s security devices
• Make a note of serial numbers. Without them, your valuable items are untraceable
• Keep driving documents at home
• Remove keys from the ignition and lock your car at petrol stations. Keep the keys with you
• Call the police if you see anyone acting suspiciously

Thank You,
PC SAMIR LAMA TAMANG

Watch your speed...we do!
The local beat officer regularly conducts speeding enforcement in the Church Hill and Crawley Hill area and PCSO Gary Slater is also trained to use a speed gun. In addition, the traffic unit conducts speeding enforcement at that location. Several drivers were given strong words of advice about the manner of their driving.

Theft from vehicles
There have been three recent thefts from motor vehicles. Power tools were taken from vans during daytime in Seymour Drive and Crawley Ridge, and a registration plate was stolen from Foxhill Crescent.

Burglaries
Two burglaries have occurred in the area since our previous update. In Redcrest Garden a burglar broke into a garden shed and took garden equipment. In Heathway the perpetrator entered a property via the side gate to the back garden and took a laptop computer from a wooden outbuilding office. Due to limited evidence, both crimes remain undetected pending further enquiries.

Most burglaries are opportunistic. Here are a few simple steps you can take to discourage a burglar from targeting your home:

Lock doors and windows
A third of all burglars get in through a back window. Lock your doors and windows even when inside the house or out in the garden. Make sure doors and frames are strong and in good condition.

Check gates and fences
An open gate or broken fence can be a tempting to potential thieves. Keep your side gate shut and locked. A burglar usually has more cover when breaking into the rear of a property.

Keep valuable items out of sight
Valuables should not be easily visible or accessible to passers-by. Keep car keys, mobile phones, handbags and wallets out of sight – and never leave car keys near an open window or door.

Switch on lights
Don't advertise your absence, even when you're away on holiday. Use timer switches to turn on lights, radios and other appliances at varying times. Some exterior lights have an infra-red sensor that reacts to movement.

Install a burglar alarm
Visible alarms make burglars think twice. There are a number of sophisticated alarm systems available, ranging in price. Consult your insurance company about which one would best suit your needs.

Consider a door entry system
If you live in a flat the most vulnerable part is likely to be the front door. Fit hinge bolts to stop the door being pulled off its hinges and consider having a telephone entry system installed.

Don't hide spare keys outside
It is vital to have a spare set of keys but you should never keep them in a convenient hiding place such as under the doormat or in a flowerpot. They are the first places a thief will look. Give a set of spare keys to a trusted neighbour or family member.

Look out for each other
Consider joining or supporting a Neighbourhood Watch group. Ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your home if you are going away and ask them to move your mail away from the front door and take in your bin. Cancel all deliveries such as milk and newspapers.

Stay alert to suspicious behaviour
If you do see anything suspicious report it to police immediately.
Call 0845 125 2222 for all non-emergency policing matters.
Call 999 in a genuine emergency requiring police attendance (eg if a crime is in progress or someone is in immediate danger).

Crimestoppers
If you have information about crime but don't want to leave your name, call Crimestoppers anonymously and for free on 0800 555 111. This could be something as simple as noting suspicious comings and going from a particular address.

Speeding issues
PC Samir Lama-Tamang regularly conducts speed enforcement on Crawley Hill, Church Hill, and Crawley Ridge.

And now there’s more good new – PCSO Gary Slater is now trained in the use of the speed gun and will carry out speed surveys.

So, if there are any areas in St Paul’s where residents believe there’s a problem with speeding, they can contact PCSO Slater or bring it up at the next Neighbourhood Panel meeting.

PCSO Slater will then visit the location twice a week to conduct a survey. If he believes there is a problem he will report back to PC Mark Barry and PC Samir Lama-Tamang who will conduct further enforcement.

The St Paul's Safer Neighbourhood Team takes speeding very seriously and we will do our very best to prosecute any speeding offenders. Once again we give our thanks to the Community Speed Watch Team for their ongoing excellent work and support.

Burglaries
Since our last update there have been three burglaries in the area which is a dramatic decreased from eight last month!

The recent burglaries happened in Iberian Way, Crawley Hill and Tekels Avenue. Unfortunately, at this stage, all three crimes remain undetected due to lack of evidence but are filed pending further enquires.

Remember: it is not only houses that get burgled. It can happen to your garage, shed or garden. We urge you to keep everything secure and locked at all times. Keep valuables out of sight and keep keys in a safe place.

PCSO Gary Slater and PC Samir Lama-Tamang conduct anti-burglary patrols in areas that get targeted a lot. But we also need the help of the local residents to inform us of any suspicious behaviour.

If you encounter any suspicious activity, please call 0845 125 2222,

If you believe someone is breaking into your property or a neighbour's always dial 999.

Criminal damage
Since our last update there have been two criminal damage offences. One took place in Highbury Crescent, the other in Church Hill. Unfortunately there have been no positive lines of enquiry so these investigations have been filed pending further evidence. If you witness criminal damage taking place, we urge you to dial 999 in the first instance.

Thefts of motor vehicles
Unfortunately we have had two were stolen in the area stolen since our last update: on from Collingwood Rise, the other from Park Road. Both of these offences are under investigation. We remind all residents to keep car keys safely out of view.

Crimestoppers
If you have any information about a crime but don't want to leave your name, call Crimestoppers anonymously and for free on 0800 555 111.

Our next Panel Meeting
Our next Neighbourhood Panel meeting has been confirmed for Wednesday, 21 April 2010 at St Paul's Church, starting time 7.00pm.

Many thanks
