Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates

Update: 13/08/2010 16:10:36

Welcome to the latest Shepperton and Halliford Web Page update.

You told us:
Youths were responsible for anti-social behaviour near the Greeno Centre, Glebeland Gardens.

We took action:
We created a neighbourhood priority report for the location.
We met with local residents to find out the key times the youths were meeting in the park.
We increased our patrols in the area – including during ‘Anti Social Behaviour Patrols’ which is a borough-wide policing response to anti-social behaviour late at night over the weekend.
To help highlight the issues at the centre, both the youths and their parents are being contacted to highlight the concerns of both the users of the centre and that of the local Council and Police.

You told us:
Youths were responsible for anti-social behaviour in Manygate Lane.

Please note that crime in the area remains low. There is often a gap between the public perception of the risk of crime and the likelihood of actually suffering crime.

Distraction Burglary:
Not all burglars break into homes; some will try to trick or con their way in. They are known as ‘bogus callers’ or distraction burglars’. They often pretend to be on official business from respectable concerns such as utility companies or councils.
They may also claim to be tradespeople and tell you they’ve noticed a problem with your roof, driveway, windows etc, offering their own services to fix it.
They might also claim to have noticed something untoward in your back garden or somewhere else to encourage you to leave your home. Beware, because they might have an accomplice waiting to slip into your property while you’re distracted.
This type of crime is quite rare and you can help further reduce the chance of it happening by following the advice below:
• Before you open your door, put your chain on and use the spy hole or look out of the window to see if you recognise the caller.
• Ask to see the caller’s identity. Genuine representatives from a recognised company or service should carry an identification card with their photograph on it. Check this carefully, shut the door and telephone the organisation they claim to represent to verify their identity and the reason for calling. Do not use the telephone number on the card as this may be false; use the number in your telephone book instead. Genuine callers will not mind waiting while you do this.
• Most utilities now offer a password identification system. Any caller from one of the these companies should be able to give a pre-arranged password as additional proof of identity. You should, however, still check their identity thoroughly as described above.
• If you are still unsure about the caller, do not let them in. Ask them to come back when you have a friend or a relative with you. Even then you should not let them go into rooms unaccompanied. If you have real suspicions about someone or see suspicious activity at a neighbour’s property, call Surrey police on 0845 125 22 22.
• Surrey Police advise against employing the services of people who just turn up on your doorstep, as it is very difficult to check them out. If you need any work done on your home, you can contact the Surrey Trading Standards ‘Buy With Confidence Scheme’ on 01372 371666 or use their website: www.buywithconfidence.info. All the traders listed have been assessed to check they comply with the law.
• Many distraction burglars prefer to target elderly people. Please look out for your elderly relatives and neighbours and pass this advice onto them.

Shepperton Football Project:
PC Lee Chamberlain recently held a four week football programme for local youths between the ages of 10-15 years.
After last years successful football coaching programme, Scott Rimmer of PSR Football Coaching based in Chobham, Surrey, agreed to help run the sessions.
By working with local Councillor Robin Sider and Spelthorne Borough Council, the funding for the project was secured to provide four, four and a half hour football coaching sessions over a four week period in June and July, without any charge to those taking part.
Head Teacher, Peter Rodin, of Thamesmead School in Shepperton very kindly provided the use of the schools facilities without charge so the programme was able to be held in the heart of the community.
On Saturday 19th June the programme ‘Kicked Off’ with the first of the four sessions and from there the project went from strength to strength; providing an extremely high standard of professional football coaching for the youths that took part in each session. Two professional football coaches from PSR Coaching provided outstanding levels of coaching throughout the programme.
Throughout the four weeks the standard of football was extremely high and the two coaches, Steve and Mark, stated that the players were a joy to coach throughout the programme and that their enthusiasm for the game was outstanding.
The programme drew to a conclusion on Saturday 10th July when a number of youths received their awards and trophy’s for a number of challenges held over the last four weeks such as the ‘Crossbar Challenge’ and ‘Penalty Shoot Out’. Several youths were also given special awards for their outstanding contribution and for displaying great ability during the four weeks of coaching.

‘Car Key Theft’ Common Sense Defence Tips:
You may think one anti-theft security device is enough, but it is always better to have many defensive strategies than one. The borough is currently experiencing a spate of burglaries where keys are being targeted and vehicles stolen as a result. We are working hard to catch the culprits, but in the meantime don't make it easy for them. Follow these handy tips to keep your vehicle safe:

•Car keys should be regarded as valuable as your bank cards. For most people vehicles are a big financial investment and car keys should be seen as an extension of this investment and should be seen as important as the vehicle.
•Make sure car keys and house keys are never kept near doors, windows or in any visible places around the house.
•Don’t leave personal identification such as vehicle registration, and bank statements with your home address and other personal details in your vehicle or visible in your home. You should always lock all house doors and windows when you are in a different room so thieves are prevented from sneaking into your house.
•Use UV (Ultra Violet) pens to security mark any valuables in the car, such as Sat Nav systems and radios and make a note of them all.
•Always take your keys with you when you leave your vehicle.
•Never leave keys in the ignition and leave your car unattended even if it is on the driveway at home.
•Always lock all windows, doors and the sunroof every time you leave the vehicle.
•Never hide a spare set of keys in your vehicle. Keep spare car keys in a hidden and secure place at home and when you are out. Be sure to always check if they are missing if your home has been broken into. If thieves obtain spare car keys they may come back and try to steal your car later.
•Always be vigilant and avoid unsafe situations, such as car jacking, by using car parks with CCTV and onsite security or try to park in well lit busy areas. Always lock vehicle doors when in the car and leave space from the car in front when at traffic lights. Make sure you hide valuables and bags in the boot or under the seat.
•Try to use your garage or your driveway for parking at home.

Charity Watch:
On 27th May, Charity shop workers in Shepperton came together to launch a new scheme aimed at stopping thieves.
Managers from five of the High Street charity shops, were at the Queen Elizabeth's Foundation store to launch Charity Watch; a scheme which will see them all working together to combat callous criminals targeting their shops.
The managers were given packs, designed by PC Chamberlain, which included each others phone numbers, a warning poster and security advice. They were also given a log, which is designed for them to note down any details, no matter how minute, of any incidents that take place in the shops, with the aim of catching repeat offenders.

Shepperton Village Fair:
On Saturday 12th June the Shepperton Village Fair will take place. PC Chamberlain and PCSO Gibbons will be policing the event and a request for extra resources has been made.

Drive SMART:
The Drive SMART campaign (currently operating throughout the county) aims to educate drivers on how to keep Surrey’s roads safe and crack down on people who drive in a selfish manner. Park SMART is part of this campaign and aims to inform motorists about current parking regulations and encourage sensible parking.
By respecting the Park SMART principles you will help to reduce inconsiderate and dangerous parking which causes all sorts of problems, including the obstruction of emergency service vehicles attempting to reach the scene of a fire or an accident.
The Traffic Management Act has made parking enforcement more transparent and fairer to motorists. With a few exceptions, enforcement of the parking regulations is the responsibility of Spelthorne Borough Council acting on behalf of Surrey County Council and Penalty Charge Notices are issued by their employed Civil Enforcement Officers.

Police officers now have only very limited powers to deal with illegal parking where on-street parking regulations are in force and as such, in most cases any enforcement will be carried out by Civil Enforcement Officers. However, Police officers retain powers to act in the following situations:

• When normal access is obstructed by an illegally parked vehicle, for example across a driveway or in front of a garage.
• When a vehicle is parked on the pavement and causing an actual obstruction in an area where there are no parking restrictions. (NB. Spelthorne Borough Council give the rule of thumb that if the user of a double buggy, mobility scooter or wheelchair can still safely seek passage via the pavement then this is deemed acceptable. For example, if a vehicle is parked in line with a lamppost.)
• On pedestrian crossings and their zigzag markings.
• When a parked vehicle contravenes the double white lines system.
• When drivers ignore temporary ‘No waiting’ cones during the course of special events.
• When illegal parking occurs on certain high speed roads and clearways on which local authorities have no powers.
• When a vehicle is parked in a position deemed to be dangerous by the officer dealing.

Safety Tips for your Car:
Luggage and valuables - Never leave anything on display. Take your things with you, or lock them out of sight in the boot. Don't keep credit cards or cheque books in the glove compartment.
Doors - Lock them every time you leave your car, even if it's for a couple of minutes because a couple of minutes is all a thief needs.
Windows - Etch an identification number, such as your registration number, on all the glassware. Thieves don't want the expense of a complete replacement.
Ignition key - Always take it out of the ignition when you leave your car, even when your car is in the garage.
Alarms - If you have one, turn it on every time you park.
Cassettes and radios - The latest security-coded equipment won't work if someone tampers with it and disconnects it from the battery. Some car stereos - or a part of them - can easily be removed and taken out of the car.
Wheels - Alloy wheels don't come cheap. To protect them, lockable wheel nuts are an effective deterrent.
Aerials - Put your aerial down when you park.
Immobilisers - Most cars already have steering locks, but an additional immobilising device is worth considering.
Fuel cap - A lockable fuel cap forces thieves to abandon your car when it's run out of petrol.
Documents - Your registration document, MOT and insurance certificate could help a thief sell your car. Keep them in a safe place at home, not in the car itself.
Parking - When at home, the safest place to park is your garage, if you have one. If not, choose a busy, well-lit area. Thieves won't risk being seen.
And remember... Thieves like older cars, too. In fact, to some extent thieves prefer them, especially so-called 'joy riders', as they don't usually have sophisticated built-in security.
