Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates

Update: 15/07/2010 15:38:50

Police offer advice following rapes in Woking
Women in Woking are being urged to be mindful of their personal safety this week as police continue to investigate two separate rape incidents, one in Goldsworth Park on Sunday night (11 July) and one in Boundary Park in the early hours on Friday (9 July).

Although it is rare in Surrey for two incidents of this type to occur in the same area, police are urging women in the Woking area to take sensible precautions when walking home alone at night.
· Try to stay in well-lit areas where possible and make sure other people know where you are
· Avoid walking home alone after an evening out - walk with friends or take a taxi
· Avoid using a personal music player or mobile phone while walking or jogging
· If you think that you are being followed, walk to the busiest place you can find, knock on a door and then call the police
· If someone attempts to take something from you, consider letting them have it rather than risk being hurt
· Consider carrying a personal attack alarm and use the alarm if you feel in fear. Alarms are available from Woking Police station, the front counter at the Civic Offices or the public library in Gloster Square

High visibility patrols have been stepped up across the town and police are keen to reassure local residents that they have launched a full and thorough investigation into the incidents to trace the offenders.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to both incidents, the most recent of which took place between 9pm and 10pm on Sunday night (11 July), near the hockey pavilion off Wishbone Way in Goldsworth Park.

The earlier incident took place in a secluded area of woodland in Boundary Park, off Boundary Road, Woking, sometime between 1am and 2am on Friday, 9 July.

Anyone with information about either incident can contact Guildford CID on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference WK/10/5097 (Goldsworth Park) or WK/10/5032 (Boundary Park). Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously and free of charge on 0800 555 111.

We continue to patrol Byfleet around the clock and conduct 'stop' checks on youths found in the area during unsociable hours. Please continue to report any suspicious or criminal activity as soon as possible, so that we can direct our patrols effectively.

You said... We Did

You asked us to... "Please check speeding along Coldharbour Road, Pyrford."
We responded... by undertaking a School Speed Watch speed education exercise in company with Surrey County Council and local school children. I had cause to stop only a handful of drivers (the fastest recorded as travelling at 45mph). As part of this exercise, errant drivers were offered the opportunity of being interviewed by the children rather than being given a Fixed Penalty Notice. This helps them to become more aware of the speed limit and to drive more carefully in future.

Residents offered FREE Secure Your Vehicle packs
Woking residents can take advantage of free security packs to help protect themselves and their vehicles from autocrime. The prevention packs includes a property marker pen and a duster to wipe away tell-tale signs left when a sat-nav is removed from a windscreen.

The goodies are part of ongoing work by the Safer Neighbourhood Team to tackle opportunistic vehicle crime which is blighting some neighbourhoods. Neighbourhood Specialist Officer PC Philip Beach said: “Residents are being offered these packs free of charge and I hope that people will go along to the outlets where they have been placed to take advantage of them. This type of crime is relatively easy to prevent with a bit of effort and the packs include practical items including UV marker pens for motorists to use to mark property with a postcode and house number and stickers which state that no tools are left in the vehicle.

“With the effects of recession still biting thieves are not likely to turn down a chance to make some easy money, so make sure you don’t provide them with the golden opportunity they are looking for. Always take any valuable items with you and lock your car when leaving it unattended.

“People can help themselves and reduce car crime by always locking the doors, windows, boot and sunroof each time they leave the vehicle. Car security devices should be used and items such as satellite-navigation systems, including the cradle, should be taken out. Simple precautions can help residents avoid becoming a victim of crime themselves.”

The Secure Your Vehicle packs have been placed at Halfords in Maybury and Byfleet, the Build Centre in Maybury and Wickes in Knaphill.

Surrey Police offers the following tips to avoid falling prey to car crime:

• Always leave handbags and wallets at home if you can. Even if your bag does not contain anything valuable, a thief will not know that and might still break a window or force a lock to get at it.

• Make sure your vehicle doors are locked and the windows and sunroof are shut, no matter how hot the weather, or even if you are only going to be gone for a couple of minutes.

• Make sure your car is parked in a location where it is in clear view of other people, not obscured from sight by trees or shrubs, therefore making it more vulnerable

• Do not leave anything in your vehicle. The most commonly stolen items from cars include laptops, handbags and mobile phones. They are easy to remove quickly, are easily concealed and do not look out of place if a thief is seen walking away from a car.

• Make sure you do not leave a coat or jacket behind in the car. A thief may think that it is hiding a laptop or handbag and break into your car to find out.

• Always remove your in-car radio/CD player if you can.

• Should anything untoward happen, descriptions and car registrations should be noted and given to the police at the time of suspicious incidents.

Profile: Hello. I took up the Neighbourhood Specialist Officer (NSO) role vacated by PC Nick Griggs on his retirement in January 2008.

I joined Surrey Police as a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) in 2005, and became a Police Constable eighteen months later. I initially worked in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Woking.

The challenge of being part of the neighbourhood team ensures that I continue my career in a role that I know makes a difference to the community. The villages of Byfleet, West Byfleet & Pyrford each have their own characteristics, and I enjoy the contact with the residents and business people.

I look forward to receiving your continued support and urge you to report any incidents that you may be victim of, or witness to.

Please monitor this site for news updates and details of our meetings, where you can come along and have your say.

Thank you.
