Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates

Update: 01/07/2010 21:43:17

Reducing burglaries: still our main priority
The key to burglary prevention is vigilance by the community. We urge Horsell residents to trust their instincts when it comes to suspicious activity in the area. If you see or hear anything suspicious please make sure this vital information is immediately reported to the police.

The best number to call is 0845 125 2222. It operates 24/7 and we are able to act upon information given as soon as possible. Always dial 999 in an emergency or for something that requires immediate attention.

Many people still 'don't want to bother the police' about what they may consider to be small or 'petty' incidents that nevertheless play on their mind. Please don't think like this, as small pieces of information help us to build a bigger picture of what's happening in the community.

The Safer Neighbourhood Team is also focusing strongly on crime prevention. This includes making sure people are not making it obvious when they are away from home. When going on holiday make sure you advise a trusted neighbours that you will be away. We are also encouraging people to secure access to the rear of their property by installing and locking side gates.

If you would like crime prevention advice or would like an officer to come and advise you on home security, give us a ring on 0845 125 2222. We will happily arrange this for you.

Thank you

Actions taken on your Neighbourhood Priorities
We have patrolled Horsell High Street extensively and have stopped many young people there. This has contributed to the fact that there have been no reported offences at this location for some time.

This was also the case for Well Lane until overnight of Friday 4 and Saturday 5 June. Unfortunately youths damaged several cars in Well Lane during this time. A group was stopped nearby and the offences are being investigated.

Two males who may have been involved in the burglaries in Horsell have been arrested. Investigations are ongoing and we continue to carry out home security visits and offer advice about looking after your property.

Neighbourhood Panel Meeting Report
There was a good turnout for the June Neighbourhood Panel meeting (despite the previous confusion).

The main topic under discussion was burglary. Although our Crime Investigation Department recently arrested two people on suspicion of burglary, there were more reports in Horsell. We are investigating these and we have some good information coming in from residents. In view of this we are hoping that a reduction will soon become apparent.

Road concerns and parking concerns were other topics of conversation. We have agreed to look at speeding in Brewery Road, Woodham Road, Horsell High Street, Church Hill and Kettlewell Hill and try to work with our partner agencies to consider the feasibility of road design changes.

We are also looking into areas where parking is an issue, especially around the schools. Again, we are looking for a long-term solution, so we will be approaching our partner agencies again to see if there's any possibility of an extension to the Controlled Parking Zone.

If you have any concerns or issues or can help with any of our priorities (especially around our burglaries), please don't hesitate to contact us.

Beware burglars!
Unfortunately Horsell is still being targeted for burglary dwellings. Here are some simple steps you can take to discourage a burglar from targeting your home:

• Close your doors and windows and lock them when you go out
• Fit five-lever British Standard deadlocks to your front and back doors, and use them
• Install a burglar alarm in your property and make sure you use it
• Keep your side gate shut and locked. Burglars often target the rear of the property as it is more secluded
• Make sure you do not leave garden tools lying around. They could be used to force entry into your house
• Postcode your valuables and photograph them. Postcoded items help police reunite recovered tems with their rightful owner

If you are going away on holiday
• Take a look at the front and rear of your property to check for any obvious signs that your are away
• Buy some timer lights and set them to come on for a few hours after dark. These can be purchased from most DIY stores
• Ask a trusted friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your property while you are away

Burglars often knock on doors to try and find out if someone is out and will make up an excuse for knocking if the door is answered. If anyone calls on your door and you feel that they are slightly suspicious, or you are confused as to why they have knocked on your door, call us on 0845 1252222.
