Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates

Update: 23/07/2010 17:14:45

You Said... We Did

You told us... of an ongoing problem with anti-social behaviour on St John's Lye.
We responded... by increasing patrols on the Lye and making the issue a Neighbourhood Priority. This means there are more resources available to help us combat this disruptive behaviour.

Joint operation to tackle taxi safety
Twenty-seven taxis were stopped in Woking as part of a joint operation to ensure that drivers and their vehicles are complying with the law.

The initiative involving 12 officers from Surrey Police, Woking Borough Council, the Benefits Agency and Immigration Services took place on the night of Thursday, 22 July in the Goldsworth Road area.

The clampdown follows complaints made to the various agencies by members of the public, about the operation of taxis in the borough. As a result of the activity two cars were seized by Surrey Police for not having insurance. The taxi drivers were fined £200 on-the-spot and received six points on their licence. They will not be able to retrieve their vehicles until they have demonstrated they have the correct insurances and pay an appropriate recovery fee.

One driver was found to be an illegal immigrant who had overstayed in the country and was therefore working illegally. His taxi plates were confiscated by police and released to the borough council licensing team. He was dealt with by the Immigration officers.

A further seven drivers were found to be claiming benefits while working and each will be subjected to a review by the Woking Borough Council Benefits Investigation Office.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Dave Griffiths said: “This operation was a huge success and a fine example of the different agencies working together and sharing information. In just over two hours there were 26 cars stopped which were licensed by Woking Borough Council - the other one was from the London area. The joint approach allowed offenders to be dealt with quickly and efficiently by staff from the appropriate agency.

“We received positive feedback from those legitimate drivers stopped and their passengers. This type of operation will be carried out in the future in a bid to ensure that taxis operating in the town are doing so safely and legally in order that our residents can feel confident in using them.“

Going Away?
If you are going away this summer, please ask a neighbour or family member to keep an eye on your house, draw curtains, collect post and newspapers, move wheelie bins and turn appliances and lights on and off (in order to prevent your house looking empty). If possible, ask someone to park a car on your drive as this can be an excellent deterrent. So are timer switches, which are inexpensive and available in hardware/DIY stores. Please remember: potential burglars know what to look for...but by taking a few simple measures you can protect your home and property from becoming a target for criminals.

Purse Dipping
We have had some reports about thieves targeting women for 'purse dipping'. When you go out shopping anywhere, we urge you to remain vigilant at all times and ensure your bag is always secure and always on you. Never leave it on the back of a trolley or chair. We set up regular crime prevention advice stalls in the area and give out handbag bells that sound if someone tries to 'dip' into your handbag. Please ask for one when you see our stall.

You said... We did

You said... "There is a problem with speeding, parking and cycling on the pavement and anti-social behaviour in York Road."
We responded... with regular foot patrols in the area at key times in order to reduce anti-social behaviour with a highly visible uniformed presence, to locate the owners of any vehicles causing obstructions and to stop cyclists riding on the pavement. We have spoken to vehicle owners and educated them about parking on the pavement and the vehicles have then been moved. Regular speed enforcement has also been conducted along York Road and several motorists have been stopped.

You said... "There are problems with speeding, and one-way system rules being broken, in Blackbridge Road."
We responded... by conducting regular speed enforcement in Blackbridge Road and asking the Road Community Support Officers to patrol the area.

You said... "There is a speeding problem in Mount Hermon Road."
We responded... by conducting regular speed enforcement in the road particularly around the Midhope Road junction.

You said... "There is a speeding problem in Hook Heath Avenue."
We responded... by carrying out regular speed enforcement. However, due to the current road works we are unable to continue with this action until they are removed.

Mobile CCTV Cameras
Woking Borough Council recently purchased two mobile CCTV cameras which can be used to monitor anti-social behaviour or other issues. Data recorded by the cameras can be presented as good photographic evidence. If specific locations in our area begin to experience persistent or reoccurring problems, the Safer Neighbourhood Team will be able to access the new cameras in order to support patrol plans and neighbourhood actions.
