Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates

Update: 03/02/2010 17:01:29

Distraction burglaries
Please remain vigilant for unannounced callers at your door. While there have been no distraction burglaries in the area recently, it remains an important problem that we all need to be aware of.

I have seen a copy of a leaflet that has recently been delivered to elderly residents’ houses in Staveley Way. These leaflets offer any type of work you may need doing around the home. If you have received this leaflet or have had any work done as a result of taking up this offer, I would be very interested to know. I would rather check out the validity of the service on offer before you use their services. This is not to say all business operating in this way are illegitimate, but unfortunately some are.

Panel update
On 28 January 2010 we held a Neighbourhood Panel meeting in Knaphill with a grand total of two local residents, two councillors, three Surrey Police staff members and a local gentleman trying to hand out leaflets for his locksmith company!

I would like to emphasis that Panel meetings are arranged for all Knaphill residents. They offer an opportunity for you to speak with us about local issues affecting the community. We discuss these concerns and vote on what you feel your Safer Neighbourhood team should be concentrating on. With around 15.000 people living in Knaphill, two local residents can’t possibly represent or reflect the views of everyone. Please make every effort to attend so that you can have your own say.

The predominant issues covered at the meeting were parking around schools, especially Chobham Road and Winston Churchill. The group was updated that the team had already carried out a very successful Operation Drive SMART day, resulting in 14 people being spoken to about the manner of their driving.

The team will ensure patrols, including more SMART days, will continue at all locations and with the participation of other officers from other policing areas, so that more enforcement can take place.

Nursery Road
PCSO Sultan Khan has been out and about in Nursery Road recently, speaking with local residents and youths concerning incidents of disorder in which items have been thrown at properties and general rowdy behaviour has been experienced. PCSO Khan has stopped many youths in the area, giving them words of advice about their behaviour.

Brookwood
It has come to my attention that Brookwood residents would like an update or further clarification on recent events in the area.

On 21st November 2009 Pamela Burrows was reported missing from the Pirbright area. Investigations were conducted in Pirbright and Brookwood through house-to-house enquires to establish if any local residents had seen her. In early December, as you will no doubt be aware, a woman’s body – which proved to be the missing person – was found on the canal path at Brookwood Lye. A post-mortem was conducted and revealed nothing suspicious. I can confirm there was no third party involvement.

On 11 December 2009 Surrey Police received a report that two nine-year-old boys were walking at the Pirbright end of Connaught Road, when a vehicle pulled up alongside them. The vehicle’s passenger got hold of one of the boys by the sleeve, shouting “Oi” and then using an offensive word to the boys telling them to leave, which they did.

When spoken to by police the boys gave a brief account of the encounter, giving a description of a five-door light blue car which was ‘round’ rather than square. The passenger was a black male approximately 20-years-old, with a shaven head. He was clean shaven and wearing a black jumper. The boys could not give a description of the driver.

PC 2768 has spoken to PC Flint of MOD who confirmed that the only information he had received was that given to him by Surrey Police at the beginning of the investigation.

We wish all our residents and businesses a very happy 2010 –and we hope that the New Year brings you all success

Anti-social behaviour in Nursery Road
The Safer Neighbourhood Team has been made aware of groups of youths acting anti-socially in Nursery Road, Knaphill. This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and individuals who are identified as being involved will be dealt with appropriately.

Neighbourhood officers will carry out increased high-visibility patrols to deter such behaviour and reassure residents. If you have any information regarding this issue, please contact the Knaphill and Brookwood Safer Neighbourhood Team on 0845 125 2222 Ext 39944.

The Big Freeze
The current cold snap presents some challenging times for us all, especially the elderly. Please take the time to check on any vulnerable friends, family or neighbours to make sure they are coping in the cold.

With adverse weather conditions expected over the coming weeks, we would also like to remind drivers of a few safety tips:

Ice
In icy conditions it is essential that you remain in control. Make all manoeuvres more slowly than normal and avoid harsh, violent movements. Stay in a high gear and avoid braking too fast. Remember that ice remains for longer periods in shaded areas. Remember that ice can form and linger under a bridge due to the flow of cold air beneath it

Snow
Snow means poor visibility. Always use dipped headlights when driving in snow. Reduced grip is also a factor, so drive slowly in a high gear. Treat snowy conditions as you would icy conditions (avoiding violent, jerky manoeuvres). Getting caught in severe snow conditions can be perilous, so avoid making the journey if possible.

And remember to wrap up warm and where possible inform someone if you are making a long journey that cannot be avoided. Take care!

Brookwood Panel Meeting
We ask all Brookwood residents to continue checking this webpage for updates on your next Neighbourhood Panel Meeting. We are currently in negotiations regarding venues and times and are looking to trial Saturday, 16 January 2010. We welcome any thoughts on this.

Stay safe and warm – and take care

Knaphill Community Fun Day
Thank you to everyone who came to our Community Fun Day at the Alexandra Gardens playing field on Monday 21 December. Despite the rain and snow over 100 people turned up to take advantage of free crime prevention goodies, craft making and an inflatable laser quest game (as well as free hotdogs and soup!). We plan to host a similar event in 2010 with many more activities and hopefully warmer weather!

Winter weather
The recent cold weather and snow brought some extremely dangerous conditions on roads and footpaths in Knaphill and Brookwood. Please take extra care when out and about in wintry conditions and allow extra time when travelling. If you are making a long journey by road, ensure that you have plenty of warm clothing with you and keep a larger than usual distance between you and the car in front, as it may take longer to stop.

Keep burglars at bay
Please help to keep burglars at bay by taking the following crime prevention advice:

• Make sure it is not obvious when you are out. Use timer lights at both the front and the rear of your property (timer switches are available from the Safer Neighbourhood Team)

• Make sure all windows and doors are locked when you go out

• Do not leave expensive items such as laptops, digital cameras or iPods on plain view near a window

• Make sure the side and rear access to your property is locked and secured

• Store items such as spades and ladders out of sight in a shed or garage. If left outside they could assist someone breaking into your property

If you see anything suspicious do not wait, call Surrey Police immediately, you could be preventing a burglary

Contact us
If you would like to speak to one of your local officers, please call us on 0845 125 2222 or come along to one of our police surgeries as detailed in the panel on the right.

The Knaphill and Brookwood Safer Neighbourhood Team wishes all our residents and businesses a safe and prosperous New Year.
