Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates

Update: 26/07/2010 14:44:14

Joint operation to tackle taxi safety
Twenty-seven taxis were stopped in Woking as part of a joint operation to ensure that drivers and their vehicles are complying with the law.

The initiative involving 12 officers from Surrey Police, Woking Borough Council, the Benefits Agency and Immigration Services took place on the night of Thursday, 22 July in the Goldsworth Road area.

The clampdown follows complaints - made to the various agencies by members of the public - about the operation of taxis in the borough. As a result of the activity two cars were seized by Surrey Police for not having insurance. The taxi drivers were fined £200 on-the-spot and received six points on their licence. They will not be able to retrieve their vehicles until they have demonstrated they have the correct insurances and pay an appropriate recovery fee.

One driver was found to be an illegal immigrant who had overstayed in the country and was therefore working illegally. His taxi plates were confiscated by police and released to the borough council licensing team. He was dealt with by Immigration officers.

A further seven drivers were found to be claiming benefits while working and each will be subjected to a review by the Woking Borough Council Benefits Investigation Office.

Woking’s Neighbourhood Sergeant Dave Griffiths said: “This operation was a huge success and a fine example of the different agencies working together and sharing information. In just over two hours there were 26 cars stopped which were licensed by Woking Borough Council - the other one was from the London area. The joint approach allowed offenders to be dealt with quickly and efficiently by staff from the appropriate agency.

“We received positive feedback from those legitimate drivers stopped and their passengers. This type of operation will be carried out in the future in a bid to ensure that taxis operating in the town are doing so safely and legally in order that our residents can feel confident in using them.“

July Neighbourhood Panel meeting update
We would like to thank all of those residents who again took the time to attend our latest Neighbourhood Panel Meeting to discuss local issues. We felt that the discussion was very positive and all agreed there had been an improvement with regards to anti-social behaviour, largely thanks to support given to the Safer Neighbourhood Team by the local community. No new issues were raised so it was agreed by those present to continue our focus on the neighbourhood issues listed on the right.

You said... We did

You said... certain issues were continuing to affect the area, particularly in regard to St Peter's Recreation Ground, at the end of Rydens Way.
We responded... by creating a Neighbourhood Issue report, whereby the Safer Neighbourhood Team focused its efforts on the area in partnership with other police colleagues. As previously reported, we then seized two mini-motos from their riders and a further person was issued with a warning under Section 59 of the Road Traffic Act which deals with anti-social driving. We have further responded to this issue by increasing our efforts in the area and have since produced two further section 59 warnings in separate incidents involving four-wheeled vehicles.

We stress that this kind of anti-social vehicle use is highly dangerous to drivers/riders and other road users alike. It is both illegal and in contravention of the Road Traffic Act. If you know the identity of anyone responsible for this reckless practise, please contact the Safer Neighbourhood Team. Meanwhile, we continue to monitor the situation and ask that residents report any incidents they deem to be anti-social on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference WK/09/6751.

Warm weather
We are midway through the summer and we continue to remind residents to remain aware of home security. Do not leave windows open due to the warm weather, or when the house is unoccupied either day or night. We also suggest that that any accessible windows at the front and the side of the building are closed when you are in the rear garden.

Secure your shed and garage
There had recently been a small increase in break-ins to sheds and garages (in some cases no property was stolen). We urge all residents who discover incidents of this nature to report them, even if no property is missing. And in order to prevent these types of incident taking place we urge residents to:
• Secure all outbuildings and entrances such as gates to areas where sheds and garages are located
• ‘Property mark’ valuable equipment store in your shed or garage

Autocrime
Although there has been a decrease in reported incidents of thefts from motor vehicles in the area, we still urge motorist to follow the crime prevention advice listed below...

Ask yourself the following questions:
• Can I afford to lose at least £100 in cash?
• Would I leave £100 cash in a neat pile on display inside my car regardless of whether or not the vehicle is locked?

If the answer to both questions is 'no, of course not', then why would you leave a removable satellite navigation system of roughly the same value in your vehicle (either on display or out of sight)? The principle is the same and we therefore suggest that the following basic crime prevention tips may assist in preventing thefts from vehicles:

• Lock the doors, windows, boot and sunroof every time you leave your car
• Use the vehicle's security devices
• Remove all items from the car – don’t just put them out of sight, under the seat or in the glove box
• Remove the satellite navigation system and take it with you whenever you leave your vehicle
• Remove the sat-nav cradle is from the windscreen and wipe off the suction mark to remove all traces

While out on patrol the Safer Neighbourhood Team continues to identify potentially vulnerable vehicles and, where possible, we advise the driver/owner accordingly. Please remain vigilant.

Neighbourhood Panel meeting update
I would like to thank all those who took the time to attend the Neighbourhood Panel meeting at the Old Woking Community Centre on Wednesday, 14 April.

Attendees were advised of a number of issues that the team are working on with partner agencies. These included the current Neighbourhood Priorities (see panel top right) which had been raised since the previous meeting and, on the recommendation of the Safer Neighbourhood Team, they remain as current issues to tackle.

The attendees raised their concerns regarding the increased anti-social behaviour in and around the Old Woking Community Centre which the Safer Neighbourhood Team is now monitoring. Consultation has and will continue with the staff at the building in order to assess the extent of the problem. We will take a robust approach against anyone identified as a cause of the concern.

St Peter's Recreation Ground
Sadly, the Safer Neighbourhood Team has to report that the issue of nuisance behaviour in the St Peter’s Recreation Ground has now spread into nearby residential streets.

We continue to monitor the situation and ask that residents report any incidents they deem to be anti-social on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference WK/09/6751.

Concerns about this behaviour now include the anti-social use of motorbikes in Rydens Way and nearby roads. This was raised as a result of residents seeing people riding these vehicles without the required safety equipment (i.e. crash helmets and number plates).

Although we are pleased to report that one person has had their vehicle seized, there appear to be others who continue to cause concern. This has resulted in a second machine being seized and its rider reported for traffic offences.

We stress that this kind of behaviour is highly dangerous to riders and other road users alike. It is both illegal and in contravention of the Road Traffic Act. If you have any knowledge of the identity of anyone responsible for this reckless practise, please contact the Safer Neighbourhood Team.
