Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates

Update: 05/07/2010 17:00:40

Hello and welcome to my webpage...

History time
Haslemere Museum now has a fascinating Surrey Police display. Please pop in, view the past and present of the force and pick up our crime prevention advice leaflets. The museum is a lovely place to visit with the family, especially with the school holidays about to begin.

School's out for summer!
Summer is here and the school holidays will soon be underway. Can parents confidently say what their child is up to at all times? I still get complaints about youths misbehaving in our area. People say it is boredom or high jinks. This is an excuse. Why should our community be subjected to such behaviour? Can parents please take time to find out what their children have been up to and what they may have witnessed? It’s not every child that causes problems, just the mindless few. Let us know who they are - we'll take it from there.

Summer security
On my beat I’ve noticed an increase in insecure properties with items of value left in plain sight. So I urge you not to leave windows and doors open in the hot weather.

Valuable toys are often left out in the garden. It may seems a small thing to worry about - but come the day when the child wants to play with the toy and it can't be found, then the fun and games begin. Not only do you have to console your child, you also have to replace the toy.

Let’s have a peaceful and enjoyable summer and be ready to deter the would-be burglar. Remember: It doesn't take long for an unwanted visitor to take advantage.

Underage drinking
Underage drinking is still a big topic and we have a proactive Pub Watch in Haslemere that is keen to help the community put a stop to it. If you know of any pub that serves those underage, let me know and I'll investigate. Also let me know about any youths who are drinking underage and which pub they are visiting.

A 17 year-old girl is currently under investigation for attempting to buy alcohol by using a false identification card. Do not let this happen to a member of your family.

Cold Callers
Cold Callers are offering to do drives, guttering, gardening or tree surgery at a cut price. However, the quality of their work is invariably very poor indeed. I recommend you use a reputable company and try to gain references of their work. If anyone knocks on your door offering such 'services', ask them to leave. If they get pushy, call the police.

There have also been complaints of people offering to clean refuse bins for an annual charge of £20. They clean the bin once, take the money and are never seen again.

Your concerns...
If you have any concerns for the area, be it crime, littering, lighting etc., do let me know. We work in partnership with many agencies and can sometimes push things along.

If you see anything suspicious or know of a crime being committed, please contact me (in total confidence). If minor crimes go unreported, the offenders become more confident and go on to commit more serious offences.

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped Surrey Police with investigations. You enable us to get the right results in dealing with those who spoil our lives. Let’s continue working together to keep our area a safe and pleasant place in which to live and work.

Enjoy the summer!

Join Community Speed Watch
We know that speeding is one of the factors affecting the quality of life within Waverley’s communities.

Surrey Police is currently inviting members of the public to work with us to tackle anti-social drivers and help make Surrey's roads safer by participating in a Community Speed Watch scheme. We provide full training, all the equipment – including hand-held speed detection devices – and ongoing support. Residents can then help to educate motorists regarding speed and raise their awareness of the impact that anti-social driving has on local communities. There are already around 80 such schemes in the county, and they are making a real difference in reducing anti-social driving.

If you are concerned about speeding vehicles in your area and would like to become involved with Community Speed Watch, or if you know of any friends or neighbours who may be interested, please contact Waverley’s Casualty Reduction Officer, PC Peter Harris, on 01483 631625 or e-mail 1767@surrey.pnn.police.uk

Beware of fine weather thieves
Even though the weather has been unpredictable, I hope you have been enjoying some sunshine. But beware: good weather also brings out would-be thieves.

The criminal does not stop to go to the beach. He/she will be out looking for homes left unsecured, with windows and doors unlocked or ajar. It takes just minutes for a burglar to enter your home and take expensive items of sentimental value.

Always double-check your home when you leave, even if you're only popping to the shops or picking up your children from school.

If you are working in the front or rear garden, please ensure that the blind side of the house is locked.

Garden sheds are favourite targets for thieves. Garden tools and other items of value will be taken. Ensure you lock the shed after use.

Bicycles and other toys are often left in the garden. They may seem of little value but, again, if it is something that is in good repair a thief will take it to gain a small payback.

Please note down all serial numbers and photograph your valuables. This will help to identify any stolen items that are recovered and will help reunite them with their rightful owner.

Anti-social behaviour
Haslemere is experiencing a problem with unsociable behaviour of late. This situation is making some people's lives a misery and will not be tolerated. Anyone seen committing such acts will be appropriately dealt with. We need to find these people and I ask you to contact me in complete confidence if you hear or see anything untoward.

Warning: York stone thefts
York stone paving has been stolen from gardens in the Chiddingfold area and other parts of Waverley. Did you know weatherproof DNA-based glue is available for marking valuable stone or similar materials. When applied this glue does not cause discolouration and has a unique identity code which is visible under ultra-violet light. For more information on the supply of this deterrent, please search for 'marking York stone' on the web.

Dog walkers warned: don't leave valuable items in your car
Dog Walkers in Tennyson Lane are being warned to keep all valuables at home and not in your car, as there's been an increase of thefts from vehicles left unattended in the area. The offender smash a window or force the lock to gain entry, thereby incurring an expense you could do without, not to mention a good deal of distress on seeing your vehicle damaged.

Beware of opportunist thieves in beauty spot car parks
With summer on the way many people are driving out to visit local beauty spots. Our officers are keen to ensure that days out are not ruined by auto crime.

Surrey Police offer the following tips to avoid falling prey to car crime:

• Always leave handbags and wallets at home if you can. Even if your bag does not contain anything valuable, a thief will not know that and may still break a window or force a lock to get at it
• Make sure the vehicle’s doors are locked and the windows and sunroof are shut, no matter how hot the weather – even if you are only going to be gone for a couple of minutes.
• Make sure your car is parked in a location where it is in clear view of other people, not obscured from sight by trees or shrubs, therefore making it more vulnerable
• Do not leave anything in your vehicle. The most commonly stolen items from cars include laptops, handbags and mobile phones. They are easy to remove quickly, are easily concealed and do not look out of place if a thief is seen walking away from a car
• Make sure you do not leave a coat or jacket behind in the car. A thief may think that it is hiding a laptop or handbag and break into your car to find out
• Always remove your in-car radio/CD player, GPS navigator if you can
• Should anything untoward happen, descriptions and car registrations should ideally be noted and reported to the police at the time the suspicious incident is occurring

Secure your shed
We are still urging residents to check that their sheds and outbuildings are secure and remain locked when not in use. We recommend you fit an audible alarm (providing you can hear it from your house).

Expensive garden equipment like motor mowers can be secured with a motorbike chain locked to steel rings bolted into concrete floors.

Please ensure all high value items are 'property marked' either by a Ultra-Violet pen or a chemical etching property marking product. These items are available via the Internet (search under 'property marking'). Even a spot of green paint from an old tin on all your garden tools could help in a police investigation!
It is also important to review access to your shed. Gates and fences should be checked to ensure they are secured and that there are no easy entry points such as gaps in hedges, into your property.

Burglars who steal from sheds and other outbuildings tend to specialise and rarely enter the main house for fear of being recognised.

Neighbourhood Panel Meetings
I will be meeting residents at High Lane Community Centre for a Neighbourhood Panel Meeting on Thursday, 17 June 2010. The meeting starts at 6.00pm and finishes at 7.00pm. I will then move on to Grayswood Village Hall to meet Grayswood residents between 8.00-9.00pm. If you live in either of these areas, please come along and let me know your concerns.

Hi,

I would like to thank the Mayor and the organisers of a successful and crime free Charter Fair. It was good to see families out enjoying themselves. The weather could have been better but many people still came along to the event. Hope to see you again in two years time.
