Actions taken on your neighbourhood priorities and general updates

Update: 30/06/2010 08:37:28

You Said... We Did

You told us... of your concerns about speeding traffic on the A287 Hindhead Road.
We responded... by installing a Vehicle Activation Sign on the A287 and carrying out speed checks. Further along the A287 at Hindhead, a School Speed Watch day was set up by the Waverly Casualty Reduction Officer, PC Pete Harris. This proved extremely successful with many motorists being spoken to by younger members of our community who re-educated them in regard to the speed limit.

You said... inconsiderate parking was a problem in in Weyhill.
We responded... by making regular patrols there and dealing with as many parking issues as possible. Waverly Parking Enforcement Officers also patrol regularly in Weyhill and the Haslemere area.

You complained... about speeding on Critchmere Hill.
We responded... by appropriately placing a Vehicle Activation Sign, to warn drivers of excess speed. Regular police and PCSO patrols also monitor the situation.

You told us... about untaxed vehicles in the area.
We responded... by appropriately dealing with any untaxed vehicles found on our patrols and duly updating the DVLA. Community members can also report untaxed vehicles to the DVLA.

Community Engagement
A key to Neighbourhood Policing is getting involved in our communities. We do this in various ways and local officers are currently taking time to organise more community engagement events. They have formulated plans that hopefully cover the spectrum of residents from youngsters to the more senior members of our community.

PCSO Daniel Keen was recently involved in a Pool Night involving 14-16 year-olds, at the Wey Centre in Weyhill. PC Will Davies attended this entertaining evening, which saw both him and Dan being knocked out in the quarter-finals. The eventual winner was Callum Mckiness who won a cream egg and a round of applause.

Dan said “events like this are a fantastic way to engage with the local teenagers as well as forming stronger links with the youth club and youth workers.”

PCSO Jessie Rossiter also organised Crime Prevention Bingo session at the Churt Community Centre, which was a huge success with many members of the community turning out to enjoy the lunchtime session and receive security tips from us. Dan also helped with this event saying he really enjoyed it and found Churt's community to be very welcoming.

Jessie also arranged an educational Quiz Night at the Beacon Hill Youth Club on Tuesday 8th June. This was very much enjoyed by all, especially as prizes were awarded to the winning team.

Join Community Speed Watch
We know that speeding is one of the factors affecting the quality of life within Waverley’s communities.

Surrey Police is currently inviting members of the public to work with us to tackle anti-social drivers and help make Surrey's roads safer by participating in a Community Speed Watch scheme. We provide full training, all the equipment – including hand-held speed detection devices – and ongoing support. Residents can then help to educate motorists regarding speed and raise their awareness of the impact that anti-social driving has on local communities. There are already around 80 such schemes in the county, and they are making a real difference in reducing anti-social driving.

If you are concerned about speeding vehicles in your area and would like to become involved with Community Speed Watch, or if you know of any friends or neighbours who may be interested, please contact Waverley’s Casualty Reduction Officer, PC Peter Harris, on 01483 631625 or e-mail 1767@surrey.pnn.police.uk

Neighbourhood team swoop after Hindhead offence
The Safer Neighbourhood Team in Waverley was on high alert this week following a number of recent shed breaks and was ready to take action on receiving a report of an intruder when proactively patrolling in the Hindhead area.

Officers responded to the call on Monday, 26 April at Beacon Hill when an intruder was trying to break into a house using a tool stolen from the garden shed. The offender was disturbed by a neighbour and made off. Local officers swiftly searched the area with the back-up of the force helicopter and dog unit. As a result a 15-year-old local youth was located and subsequently charged with one offence and is on bail in relation to a number of others.

Neighbourhood Inspector Simon Dann said: “This initiative by the local Safer Neighbourhood Team has really paid off here and the arrest demonstrates their determination to take this sort of crime seriously and to do everything possible to bring offenders in our communities to justice.”

The arresting officer, NSO PC Will Davies, is encouraging members of the public to report all suspicious incidents to police and to be vigilant regarding outbuilding security. He advises: “Please remember to secure your properties appropriately using strong locks and clasps on your shed. Cover windows, chain items together and do not leave valuables on display. Crime prevention details can be discussed with the local team and addresses can be visited to ensure suitable security.”
