Olympic Torch Relay passes safely and securely through Surrey

Thousands of Surrey residents enjoyed the safe passage of the Olympic Torch through the county today (Friday, 20 July).

An estimated 160,000 people turned out as the Torch made its way through Godstone, Bletchingley, Redhill, Reigate, Dorking, Shere and Godalming before arriving in Guildford.

The Torch left by Royal Navy helicopter from Stoke Park in Guildford at 7:30pm where 25,000 people enjoyed the evening celebration and later touched down safely at The Tower of London to mark its arrival in the host city.

Surrey Police officers, working alongside the Metropolitan Police’s Torch Security Team, volunteer marshals, the local borough councils and Surrey County Council, ensured the day passed off without incident. By 10pm, only one arrest had been made for a minor public order offence in Guildford.

Chief Superintendent Gavin Stephens said: “This was a momentous day for the county and the thousands of people who lined the streets have enjoyed a safe day out.

“The atmosphere was fantastic and the policing operation has been a success. I would like to thank all Surrey Police officers and staff for their significant efforts today.

“We are now looking forward to next weekend when the Men and Women’s cycle Road Races enter the county as the Games get into full swing.”
