5 months, 660 traffic offences!

Whilst only in operation for the past 5 months and becoming fully staffed in the last few weeks, the Vanguard Road Safety Team have not held back in proactively working to reduce the number of those killed and seriously injured on the roads of Surrey, by targeting the ‘Fatal 5’ leading contributors to road traffic collisions;

• Inappropriate speed
• Not wearing a seatbelt
• Driving under the influence of drink or drugs
• Distracted driving, such as using a mobile phone behind the wheel
• Careless driving

 

As well as carrying out proactive patrols, the team have been working closely with a specialist data researcher to target specific individuals. With in-depth intel Vanguard have successfully intercepted 61% their targets. Although not all were found to be committing the road crime intel suggested, they were left in the knowledge that they can expect to be stopped again, helping to deter from crime being committed.

 

Sergeant Pascoe from the team, said: “The team have been out targeting persons of interest who are suspected of putting others in danger by driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs, those using their handheld mobile phone whilst driving and other Fatal 5 offences, whilst also providing a visible deterrent and reassurance to our local communities and supporting our neighbourhood policing teams at car cruises.

 

“We’ve had some excellent results so far, with drivers being charged with dangerous driving, drink and drug driving, disqualified driving and many many more. We can’t be everywhere, but could be anywhere – if you drive illegally in Surrey, we’re here to stop you.”
