A man who assaulted and robbed a 37-year-old woman as she walked home from work has been sentenced to two years and three months in prison.

Ryan Davies, 31, of Glendale Drive, Guildford was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on Friday (20 January) after pleading guilty to robbery.

As the victim walked home from work in the early hours of 1 October 2020, on Guildford Park Avenue Guildford, she was approached by Davies from behind who then stole her rucksack having told her to give up her purse. After she refused, Davies punched the victim in the face several times before leaving the area.

The victim required hospital treatment for severe bruising to her face.

After witnesses recognised Davies fleeing the area after the robbery, he was located and arrested at an address in Guildford later that morning.

The officers at the scene took a number of forensic samples from the victim’s clothing and part of the rucksack which had been torn off during the struggle.

The DNA found on the piece of rucksack that was left behind was a match for Davies and proved crucial in securing his conviction.

Detective Constable Vicky Allen, who investigated the case, said: “This was a cowardly and violent assault which left the victim incredibly shaken with appalling facial injuries.

“I would like to thank the officers and staff who, through fast-time enquiries, were able to identify and arrest Davies just hours after the incident had taken place.

“Robbery is an incredibly serious crime and absolutely will not be tolerated in Surrey.”

If you witness a robbery taking place, always call 999.
