You can report a sexual assault or rape that happened at any time to us, even if it was months, years or decades ago.
We understand that there are lots of reasons why someone might not feel ready to tell police, or even a family member or friend, about a rape or sexual assault. We also know survivors can take time to realise that what happened to them is a crime.
You can report a sexual assault or rape that happened at any time to us, even if it was months, years or decades ago. We always treat reports of this nature extremely seriously, no matter how much time has passed, and will ensure they are fully investigated.
That was the case in the investigation into James Collett, 79 (DOB 30.7.44) of Godalming. Collett was sentenced on Thursday, 27 June at Guildford Crown Court to nine months in prison suspended for 18 months along with unpaid work and 10 years on the sex offenders register, after being convicted of one count of indecency with a child.
Collett’s crime took place 55 years ago in 1969, before lots of our officers were even born. That did not deter Surrey Police’s investigators from pursuing justice for Collett’s victim, who was a young girl when this happened.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Kristian Baker says: “If you have been the victim of a similar offence please come forward and talk to us, we will support you, irrespective of when the crime took place.”
