We are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Lightwater this morning (Friday, 2 August).
Officers attended the A322 Lightwater bypass between the M3 and the Gordon Boys roundabout shortly after 2.30am following reports of a collision between the driver of a car and a pedestrian.
South East Coast Ambulance Service attended but sadly the pedestrian, a woman in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the car stopped at the scene and has been assisting police with our enquiries.
Road closures were in place overnight while the initial stages of our investigation were carried out. These have now been lifted.
We are now trying to trace the movements of the pedestrian prior to the collision. Were you travelling along the A322 last night between midnight and 3am? Did you see a person walking along the side of the southbound carriageway?
If you saw any part of this incident, have CCTV, dash cam or helmet cam footage that might have captured it, or you have any information that might help, please get in touch quoting PR/45240087576 via:
If you do not wish to speak to police, you can call independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Surrey Police is making a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct following this incident, which is being treated as death following police contact. This is due to reports relating to the individual who sadly died which were received in the hours preceding the collision.
