A young man who stole two cars from their driveways in separate offences has been jailed.
Stanley Newell, 18 (DOB: 12/03/2006), of Burnhams Grove, Epsom, was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on Monday 21 October, after he pleaded guilty to two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, two counts of burglary and the use of a motor vehicle without third-party insurance.
Newell was arrested following a pursuit with Metropolitan Police on the morning of 3 July, after the vehicle he had stolen earlier was spotted by keen eyed officers. Just hours before at around 4am, Newell had broken into a home in Ewell and stole two sets of keys – including one set for the Ford Focus he was later arrested in – and a purse containing cash and bank cards. He then made off in the vehicle.
Following his arrest, investigating officers were able to connect Newell with a separate offence in Epsom from 27 June, which followed a similar pattern of keys and car being stolen.
Newell was sentenced to a total of 25 months, with 16 months to be served in a Young Offenders Institution. He has also been ordered to pay a surcharge of £228, and was disqualified from driving for 30 months, after which he will need to complete an extended test.
Safer Neighbourhood Team Sergeant Adam Staplehurst said: “Newell continued to exhibit a continuous disregard for law as he invaded people’s homes – a place where people should be able to feel their most secure.
“The efforts of the SNT and our Local Proactive Team have been key in securing this conviction, and I hope this continues to serve a message on our zero-tolerance stance to criminal behaviour.”
