Update: Incident at Sunbury Lock
The body of a man has been recovered from the River Thames near Sunbury today (20 October).
Surrey Police, Surrey Search and Rescue, Berkshire Search and Rescue and Kent Search and Rescue, have been searching the riverside near Wheatleys Eyot since Friday, 11 October, following a call to emergency services at around 8.50am reporting that six adults had entered the water. Five people were safely rescued from the water but the sixth, a man in his 60s, was unaccounted for.
Sadly, earlier today, specialist search teams recovered a man’s body near to Sunbury Weir.
Formal identification is yet to take place, but the family of the missing man have been informed and are being supported by a specialist officer.
An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of the man’s death. However, his death is not being treated as suspicious.
Andy Jenkins, Chief Inspector for North Surrey, said "Throughout this tragic incident we have been in close contact with the man’s family to offer them support and information during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts remain with them, and we ask that their privacy is respected while they come to terms with their loss.”
