Brothers behind bars after Surrey shoplifting spree

Two brothers who spent nearly five months on a shoplifting spree across Surrey have been jailed for more than two years.

Time caught up to Bradley Purssey, 34, and Daniel Purssey, 36, on 2 August, when they were finally arrested following numerous reports of theft from stores across the county.

The brothers worked together, visiting various shops and targeting high-value alcohol, often stuffing their jackets or backpacks with bottles. One offence at Waitrose in West Byfleet saw an estimated £1,050 worth of alcohol stolen, with the brothers seen on CCTV filling bags with various branded bottles of booze. Numerous reports also found the brothers to be physical with shop staff, including one incident at Sainsbury’s in Knaphill, where staff were shoved away as the pair attempted to make their exit with bags filled with chocolate.

In total, the brothers were charged with 55 offences, including 29 separate incidents of theft and four charges of assault on shop staff and security.

Appearing at Chichester Crown Court on Wednesday, 18 December, Bradley Purssey (DOB: 05/03/1990), of High Street, Addlestone, was sentenced to two years in prison. Brother Daniel (DOB: 15/09/1988), of Wey Court, Addlestone was sentenced to two years and eight months for his involvement in assault on shop and security staff. During sentencing, the judge said the brothers stole from under the noses of staff with no fear of consequences. He said their actions were ones of true dishonesty and recognised the long-term effects they had on their victims.

PC Ajmain Bhuiyan, of North Surrey’s Neighbourhood Policing Investigation Team, said: “This investigation was far from straightforward, involving extensive lines of enquiry, detailed evidence gathering, and close collaboration with victims, witnesses, and local businesses. Despite the complexities, we remained committed to ensuring those responsible were brought to justice.

“This week, both defendants have been sentenced for their actions, which caused harm and distress to our local community. This outcome demonstrates our unwavering determination to tackle crime, protect businesses, and hold offenders accountable.

“To our residents and local businesses, please be reassured that Surrey Police takes crimes of this nature extremely seriously. We will continue to work tirelessly to keep our community safe and ensure that those who break the law face the consequences of their actions.

“Thank you to everyone who came forward with information and to the businesses who cooperated with our enquiries. This was a team effort, and I am proud of the hard work and dedication shown by all involved in bringing this case to a successful conclusion.

“If you ever have concerns about crime in your area, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are here to support you.”
