The effective use and application of Stop & Search and Use of Force powers by police are areas which rightly attract scrutiny as they involve police exercising intrusive and sometimes controversial powers, to maintain public safety and uphold law and order. The fair and appropriate use of these powers is central to the legitimacy of policing and our ability to police by consent and maintain public confidence. An Internal Governance Board will establish a robust system of scrutiny, accountability, and full transparency in ensuring their accountable application.
The purpose of the Stop & Search and Use of Force Internal Governance Board is for the Force Strategic Leads and Key Stakeholders within force to conduct a joint review, with transparent quality assurance, scrutiny, and feedback around the use of Stop & Search and Use of Force powers. Actions and learning from this meeting will report into the External Scrutiny Panel and Joint Force Legitimacy Board and will be disseminated to divisional and departmental leads and deputy leads and other identified owners via the Internal Governance Board.
Meetings take place quarterly. We will publish the minutes here.
