Surrey Police has completed its 27th year policing The Derby at Epsom Downs.
The Derby is one of the Force’s largest policing operations of the year. This year’s event, which took place on 5 and 6 June, was carried out with officers, staff, and volunteers from Surrey Police and Sussex Police working closely with The Jockey Club to prevent criminality and keep people safe. The operation included specialist resources including planning, intelligence, drones, public order, and local policing.
This year’s event was attended by His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty Queen Camilla on Derby Day, who were able to enjoy the event alongside tens of thousands of people across the two days.
A total of 11 arrests were made over two days in the area in and around the racecourse.
Chief Superintendent Graham Barnett said, “The Derby at Epsom Downs is the largest pre-planned policing operation in Surrey each year.
“Each of the 27 years we have been policing the event has been different, but every year, alongside event organisers and local partner agencies, our officers, staff, and volunteers work hard to support the safe running of the event, keeping people safe both at The Derby, and in the local area. I’m proud of all their efforts this weekend.
“I would like to thank those who attended the event for enjoying it sensibly, and the local community for their understanding and patience this weekend. We know this event can cause disruption for those in, and travelling through, Epsom. To ensure we were preventing and responding to reports of crime and anti-social behaviour swiftly, we increased our policing presence in and around the local area, including Epsom town centre."
