A man has been sentenced to over two years in prison after a harrowing and targeted attack which took place late last year.
Michael Chennell, 33, (DOB 06/09/1990), of Barker Road in Chertsey, was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on Tuesday (14 May), and handed a 26-month prison sentence along with a 6 year restraining order.
Chennell was found guilty of false imprisonment, coercive and controlling behaviour, actual bodily harm and criminal damage at trial last month.
The sentencing comes after officers were called in the early morning to an address in Chertsey in November 2023, after local residents heard someone shouting for help. The victim, who had been subjected to physical and emotional abuse, was in a state of distress when officers arrived on scene after Chennell had held her captive and made her feel in fear of her life.
Investigators compiled doorbell footage, victim and witness statements and evidence to present a compelling case to the court. In an attack that had a profound effect on those involved, justice was served as Chennell was ordered to spend time behind bars.
Investigating officer Charlotte Barrett said “I would like to personally thank the victim in this case and her family for their immense courage in supporting and trusting us with this investigation, and for giving evidence at the trial. This case is also a testament to community whereby the neighbours intervened and helped the victim during this incident. If you believe your loved ones may be experiencing domestic abuse, please check in with them and encourage them to report it.”
