Remarkable, Extraordinary, Special.

Our Special Constables (or Volunteer Police Officers) come from many different backgrounds and walks of life and form a vital link between their communities and our Force. Through their volunteering with our operational policing teams, Special Constables provide valuable additional capacity and resilience to our frontline resource. 

Special Constables in Surrey are based at the same police stations, have the same powers in law, (including the power of arrest) and are issued with the same uniform and kit as our regular (paid) officers. We ask for a minimum commitment of 16 operational hours per month from each of our Special Constables, although many do considerably more.

Our Special Constables are involved in all aspects of policing, particularly responding to fast time incidents as part of our neighbourhood policing teams, tackling anti-social behaviour, taking part in targeted days of action, resourcing raids and warrants, and supporting special events such as the Epsom Derby.

This is a volunteer role like no other; it is challenging but very rewarding.

As a Special Constable you will become a valued member of our policing family and have the opportunity to:

• Contribute to policing in your community
• Learn new and transferable skills, particularly communication and problem-solving skills
• Undertake continuous training to maintain and develop your operational competence
• Experience policing first-hand; there is nothing quite like it!

As you gain experience in the role, you may be offered the opportunity to develop additional skills, join one of our specialist teams and/or be promoted to supervisory ranks.
